Job Summary

API is currently seeking a Policy Advisor in the Natural Gas Markets department to focus on global gas & LNG issues. The Natural Gas Markets department works to remove unnecessary barriers to the continued use of U.S. natural gas and the continued buildout of U.S. LNG export terminals. It also works to communicate the critical role U.S. natural gas can play in a lower carbon energy future. These efforts are focused on target market segments, including the domestic power, industrial and residential/commercial sectors, as well as natural gas exports (both LNG and pipeline). The Department also has a strong focus on new and emerging technologies related to natural gas.

The successful Policy Advisor will help in the development, oversight and execution of strategies designed to communicate the many benefits U.S. natural gas can provide to importing countries around the world. The role requires engagement with many stakeholders, including internal and external and domestic and international, and will encompass efforts focused on communications, government affairs, research and education, regulatory advocacy and market sector outreach.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Responsible for leading API's efforts on global gas & LNG issues.
• Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with policymakers, the diplomatic community and a broad and expanding set of other relevant stakeholders, including API member companies and other allied trade associations.
• Contribute to the development of API policy positions pertaining to Global Gas & LNG, and natural gas more broadly.
• Identify opportunities where API can meaningfully influence outcomes that will sustain and increase use of natural gas; establish appropriate goals for increasing demand; contribute to the development of strategies to achieve those goals; and actively participate in the execution of those strategies.
• Prepare written comments, research reports and other formal communications (e.g. presentations) focused on global gas & LNG issues on behalf of API.
• Serve as a spokesperson for the organization to promote a better understanding of the use of U.S. natural gas both at home and abroad. Audiences include media, the general public, and relevant stakeholders. This includes actively seeking opportunities to engage with such audiences.
• Work with the Government Affairs Department to anticipate and identify legislative and regulatory opportunities and/or issues at the federal, state and local levels and assist with efforts to ensure consistency and alignment with overall API strategy. This includes detecting issues, identifying opportunities to promote or defend API objectives, consulting with member companies, allied trades and other experts, providing policy guidance, and participating in execution where appropriate.
• Provide updates to, and support for other API departments on priority policy or project initiatives in a timely manner, often on a rapid-response basis. Work with the Communications Department and others in API to develop core messaging around global gas & LNG issues.
• Participate in API committee and subcommittee meetings and work to ensure member company engagement and coordination.

Key Relationships

• Shall exercise a high level of independent judgment with minimal supervision, while cooperating with other API staff, committees and member company representatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree, with Master's degree strongly preferred,
• 5-7 years of professional experience focused on global energy issues, especially natural gas and LNG.
• Deep understanding of global natural gas markets and the key drivers of emerging supply and demand trends. Must also understand U.S. natural gas markets, including the legislative/regulatory environment.
• Deep understanding of international energy policy, including knowledge of key stakeholders in Washington D.C. and abroad. Proven track-record of working with such stakeholders a plus.
• Excellent analytical, written communication, presentation and public speaking skills, with experience translating complex data into compelling narratives applicable to both general and expert audiences.
• Willingness to travel (including internationally) and speak publicly on behalf of the organization.
• Ability to handle multiple issues concurrently and to prioritize while maintaining a high quality of work.
• Ability to build new, and maintain existing, relationships with other API departments, member companies and a variety of other external stakeholders.

Physical Requirements

• Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer
• Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc. on occasion
• Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines
• Transport items and equipment up to 10 lbs. on occasion
