Position Description

Mid-Level Biologist

Harris' growing Environmental, Engineering, and Consulting Division does industry-leading work in environmental planning and compliance, community planning and housing solutions, engineering design, municipal and district finance, and one water solutions. Harrishas an opening for a Mid-Level Biologistto join our Environmental Planning and Compliance team in the Biology Group.

The biologistwill be responsible for:
  • assisting the lead biologist on staff
  • assisting managing biological-resources related tasks
  • conducting general and focused biological surveys, including protocol sensitive species surveys and habitat assessments for sensitive species
  • authoring biological technical reports, regulatory permit applications, and assist in agency coordination and negotiations during permitting processes
  • assisting with data collection and data management tasks
  • understanding CEQA and NEPA requirements as well as local MSHCPs, and federal and state permits
  • compliance/construction monitoring
  • assisting managing projects involving biological resources
  • working with other biologists on the team
  • assisting with data management
The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and proven record of working collaboratively in a team environment.

Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in biological sciences
  • 5 years of experience as a biologist in San Diego County/Southern California
  • Experience in the field of ornithology and have some experience working with other avian species of special concern
  • Experience with protocol and focused wildlife surveys
  • Experience identifying native plant species and vegetation communities
  • Experience with habitat assessments, vegetation mapping, and general biological reconnaissance surveys
  • Experience with environmental compliance and compliance monitorin
  • Possession of a valid USFWS 10(a)1(A) permit to conduct wildlife protocol surveys for species in southern California, including, but not limited to at least one of the following:least Bell's vireo, California gnatcatchers, southwestern willow flycatcher, large listed branchiopods (i.e., San Diego fairy shrimp, Riverside fairy shrimp), Stephens' kangaroo rat or California least tern.
  • Ability to write various biological technical documents
  • Ability to coordinate with applicants and agency staff on mitigation strategie
  • Assist with data collection, entry, and management.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience with regulatory agency permitting processes and agency negotiations
  • Experience with ornithology, and sensitive bird species not listed under Endangered Species Acts
  • Experience with native plant species identification including rare plants.
  • Proficient use of Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Earth, and other related software.
  • Experience with GPS units/software, ArcGIS, ArcCollector and sub-meter field data collection.
Work Environment
The Biologist must be capable of working in temperature extremes for long hours and be able to handle strenuous physical activity and conditions (i.e., hiking for hours a day while carrying equipment).

Compensation & Benefits
The annual salary range offered for this position is $80-120K.Actual pay offered will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
