Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Advanced Nuclear Fuels Researcher to work in our Computational Mechanics & Materials department. Our team works a 9x80 or schedule located out of our Collaborative Computing Center with every other Friday off.

Our Researcher will focus on performing engineering analyses of advanced nuclear fuels (TRISO, metallic fuels, advanced LWR, and research reactor fuels) and materials using the Bison finite element code. You will perform and help develop simulations for nuclear fuels and materials for a variety of nuclear reactor designs, while also demonstrating and communicating the impact of the simulations with various programs and sponsors. You will also perform simulations that help grow nuclear fuel research at and beyond INL and contribute to engineering projects that impact scientific problems, solving complex technology issues facing the nation.

Responsibilities Include:

* Using computational methods and models for analysis of nuclear fuels and materials.

* Document impact through publication of journal papers, presenting work at conferences, and writing internal reports.

* Actively work with mentor/manager in development of a professional development plan. The plan will outline both research development and career development.

* Have knowledge and/or completed coursework relevant to nuclear fuels and materials performance under irradiation.

* Perform engineering analyses for advanced fuel types using the Bison code.

* Write and contribute to scientific or engineering reports for publication and present research results at national conferences.

* Help develop plans for new research areas and proposals.

* Become a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work both alone and as a team member.

* Working knowledge of scientific computing languages: C++, Python, git, MacOS/Linux.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

* PR0100 master's degree. PR0200 master's degree and one year of professional experience. Degree in nuclear, mechanical, civil or a related engineering field with a focus on finite element analysis.

* Be able to obtain and retain access to the software packages under development.

* Familiarity with finite-element analysis (Abaqus, ANSYS) or fuel performance codes (Bison, TRANSURANUS, FAST/FRAPCON/FRAPTRAN)

* Experience in software quality and maintenance.

* Excellent skills in communicating scientific results with a prior publication record.

* Advanced programming skills with scientific computing: C++, Python, git, MacOS/Linux, and LaTeX
