Job Description
Join our team who is committed to the delivery of the highest quality health care service. We are seeking a seasonal (June 2021 to August of 2021) DEH & CW Habitat Restoration High School Intern that is self-motivated, energetic, and a take charge individual.

General Statement of Duties:

The Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers is hiring high school aged interns to work outside alongside our staff and other experts along the Kinnickinnic River to restore the ecology of the greenspace.  The DEH & CW Habitat Restoration Intern will perform duties related to habitat restoration within the Kinnickinnic River Watershed and will work with DEH&CW staff to accomplish this work.  Interns will gain work experience and learn about invasive and native plants and animals from local experts and will be expected to:

Responsibilities:
  1. Keep a field notebook observing wildlife species, trash and planting success.
  2. Assist with plant, tree, and shrub planting, if necessary.
  3. Assist with bat and bird house installation.
  4. Water and weed newly established plants.
  5. Participate in plant and insect surveys.
  6. Participate in invasive species removal.
  7. Pick up trash and weigh/count trash bags.
  8. Other duties as necessary, which may include outreach to recruit volunteers to habitat restoration events.
  9. Treat fellow interns and DEH&CW staff with respect.
  10. Follow COVID safety precautions.
Qualifications:
  1. Willingness and interest in working outdoors and in nature. Experience working outdoors, performing land stewardship is helpful, but not required. If no previous experience, then express interest in working in and learning about these fields.
  2. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations.
  3. Experience and comfort using hand tools preferred, but if no previous experience, willingness to learn.
  4. Reliable form of transportation to the Kinnickinnic River Trail (approximately 107 E. Lincoln Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53207), as well as to Lincoln Avenue Elementary School (1817 W. Lincoln Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53215) SSCHC’s Parkway location (2906 S 20th St, Milwaukee, WI 53215), Pulaski Park (2607 S 16th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53215) and Turtle Park (2134 N Riverboat Rd, Milwaukee, WI 53212).
  5. The Kinnickinnic River Trail is our main meetup spot, but we will be meeting at the other locations at least once during the course of the internship.
