Job Description
Position Summary: The Head Cook (HC) assures food and nutrition services rendered at St. Joseph Academy (SJA) are extended consistently with accepted national food handling standards, SJA mission and core values, the policies and procedures of the institution, and the standards of all regulating and licensing agencies. The HC prepares food, ensures effective equipment operations, sanitization, facility cleaning, and record keeping. The HC also assists in overall inventory control of food, supplies, recipes/menus, reports and staff supervision. 
 
Position Reports to: Food Services Manager
 
Qualifications:
  • High school degree or GED required; Culinary Arts Degree, or related degree, preferred
  • Serve Safe Certification required
  • 1+ years experience supervising a high quality CACFP or DPI food service program
  • Knowledge of early childhood nutrition and preparing culturally diverse food for groups
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze an issue, identify options, and implement solutions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people in and outside of Food Services department
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing); effectively interact with children, vendors, managers and staff members
  • Ability to read, write and follow directions and instructions
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation standards in food service environments and national food handling standards
  • Detail oriented; ability to multi-task, set priorities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Experience in inventory control and ordering of food and supplies
  • Computer and software knowledge to effectively perform tasks required
 
Equipment Used: Food Service Equipment; Office equipment: personal computers, printers, phone systems
 
Physical and Mental Requirements: Must have ability to walk and stand routinely throughout the shift.  Must have the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. with ease and push up to 350 lbs. with the appropriate equipment. Must have the ability to deal effectively with the stress of responding quickly and be engaged in multiple tasks. 
 
 
Environmental Conditions:
Performs duties with exposure to infectious or communicable diseases inherent to care of children, and occasional exposure to loud or unpleasant voices due to unpredictable behavior of children and seasonal exposure to high humidity due to temperature control of the facility.   Exposure to varying types of ware chemicals, cleaning agents and various types of food service areas that contain possible hazards such as slippery surfaces.
