Mount Mary University has a new position with in "The Promise Program" which is a federally funded Student Support Services TRiO program. The program serves first-generation and low-income college students in an effort to help them remain in good academic standing, persist in college, and graduate with a 4-year degree.
Position Status:
Full-time (100%) – 12 months *Contingent upon grant funding
Reports to:
Promise Program Director
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. Degrees in education, psychology/sociology, social work, or counseling desired
Minimum of one year of relevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar programs that serve first generation, low-income, and/or disabled college students
Minimum of one year of professional work experience in higher education related to advising and providing academic support programs in a college setting
Knowledge about first-year transition issues and effective measures to enhance first-year student retention
Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group process and foster collaborative decision making.
Familiarity with the challenges first-generation, low-income students encounter, especially as it relates to career decision-making or advanced degree planning.
Understanding of retention issues in higher education
Responsibilities:
Provide individual consultation, assessment, advising, intervention, advocacy, problem solving, and referral for students regarding their academic, career, personal, and financial circumstances at the University.
Assess students' academic, career, personal, and financial needs; interpret results of formal and informal needs assessments; design services in consultation with the student to meet students' needs.
Assist students with improving financial and economic literacy and obtaining financial aid and scholarships, completing the FAFSA, and budgeting.
Create, facilitate, and promote academic and social skill workshops
Coordinate the extended summer orientation sessions for first-year students and provide structured group activities aimed to improve the academic performance and retention of first and second-year students throughout the school year
Maintain student data and records in a manner that ensures confidentiality and continual audit-readiness in terms of organization, completeness, accuracy, and full and appropriate documentation. Maintain participant information, including case notes and contact hours in the database in a complete, timely, and accurate manner and within established deadlines.
Collaborate with faculty, staff and other members of the Mount Mary community as necessary to promote student college success
Participate in staff meetings, professional development offerings and Mount Mary University community-building activities and events
