Carmelite Home for Boys opened its doors to the homeless in 1917. Countless small children, infants and toddlers, were cared for lovingly by the Sisters. In the 1930’s, a large new building was constructed and immediately filled with needy boys. In 1967, the Sisters made the momentous decision to update the group home into a residential treatment facility for adolescent boys who were engaged in delinquent behavior.
For the past several decades, the Carmelite Sisters D.C.J. have responded to the challenges of these young men and have succeeded in instilling into many of them a spirit of Christianity that has enabled them to return home and grow into productive and healthy adults.
Our program goal is, “To bring troubled children to a level of functioning to return them to the community as productive and law-abiding citizens.” The youth under our care are sent to us by the Juvenile Court with a vast array of treatment needs. Our program provides comprehensive care for these youth which includes psychiatric, mental health, spiritual, academic, daily living, and recreational opportunities. We are afforded so little time to provide a positive impact on the lives of these troubled young men. The dedication, commitment, experience, and wisdom of the Sisters and a seasoned professional staff offer a ray of hope for these youth, their families and our community.
Specific programming includes individual, group, and family therapy with a licensed social service staff that bring 100 years of experience among them. Our on-grounds special education services are provided by licensed teachers. Psychiatric and psychological consultation and assessment services are provided weekly. Daily supervision and guidance for our youth are the labors of a dedicated and well trained child care staff.
God continues to touch the challenged lives of our young people and their families with the caring hearts and experienced hands of the Sisters and lay staff. The mission of the Carmelite Home for Boys continues to provide quality caring service to a population in great need.
