Mirus was originally founded in 1995 by three UW scientists (Jon Wolff, Jim Hagstrom, and Vladimir Budker) with the intent of developing technologies for gene therapy applications based on research they performed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The founding principle was that non-viral (i.e. plasmid DNA based) methods offer distinct advantages over viral methods of gene transfer. Following this path, Mirus pioneered the development of a wide range of non-viral delivery technologies using proteins, polymers, and lipids in conjunction with novel chemistries that provide unsurpassed nucleic acid delivery capabilities in vitro and in vivo. By adapting its gene delivery technologies for use with small nucleic acids, Mirus became a recognized leader in the in vitro and in vivo delivery of siRNA for gene knock-out research applications using RNA interference. In 2008, Roche purchased the therapeutic side of the business and the commercial transfection reagent side of the business became Mirus Bio LLC.
