The district inspires learning for more than 36,370 students in its 45 elementary schools, seven middle schools, seven high schools, eight special education schools, eight alternative schools, 19 contract alternative schools and five charter schools. The district's student population is highly diverse, with more than 90 languages spoken in homes. Most district communications are printed in English, Hmong, Spanish and Somali.


Minneapolis schools' academic programs prepare students in the basics and challenge them to achieve their personal best. In 2001, the district led the state by introducing all-day kindergarten in every school. Since state testing in reading and mathematics began, the district's elementary scores have improved every year. Strong district partnerships with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the Neighborhood Revitalization Program have produced many school/park complexes, joint use facilities and inviting playgrounds, which enhance neighborhoods throughout the city.
