The Special Procedures Technologist works under the general supervision of the Interventional Radiologist. The Technologist assists with a variety of diagnostic and interventional radiologic procedures, according to departmental protocol, as requested by the physician order. Positions the patient, and sets protocol factors with a high degree of competency on the imaging system.

Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need, which may include but is not limited to: holidays, extended shifts, night and/or weekend shifts, standby and/or on-call. Reports to: Director, Clinical Coordinator

Essential Functions

Assesses and prepares patients for procedure; communicates instructions and information. Answers patients' questions; puts patient at ease. Follows AIDET model to consistently achieve highest quality of patient satisfaction. Reviews patient's medical history and prior imaging records as required. Reviews physician order for accuracy and appropriateness.

Prepares for interventional procedures by anticipating the needs of the radiologist and having supplies, instruments and equipment readily available. Coordinates with device manufacturer reps regarding future equipment needs. Appropriately decrements supplies to maintain correct inventory levels. Participates in scheduled inventory reconciliation.

Assists the interventional radiologist in the performance of diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. Demonstrates a high level of technical competency (utilization of the imaging system and safe operating procedures) and clinical competency (patient positioning, knowledge of anatomy/physiology) in performing all procedures. Practices aseptic technique, recognizes breaks in technique and ensures sterility of surgical field.

Following department and modality specific policies, procedures and protocols, safely administers contrast media, medications and radiopharmaceuticals to patients; demonstrates a high level of competency in establishing an IV when required. Consults with radiologist regarding changes in physician order, procedure protocol and patient status.

Demonstrates a working knowledge of all safety guidelines and procedures, while providing patient care and related tasks. Consistently wears radiation monitoring badge(s) when on duty. Utilizes radiation safety equipment, e.g. aprons, gloves, lead shielding. Consistently utilizes maximum beam collimation; practices ALARA principles and monitors radiation dose as required.

Correctly and accurately utilizes the RIS, ORM and/or PACS to access patient information, enter charges, complete examinations, and documents services as required. Promptly delivers exam paperwork to radiologist, when necessary.

Utilizes proper body mechanics in all contacts. Assists team members in patient positioning and transport. Assists with room preparation to facilitate patient turnover. Exhibits knowledge and understanding of lab specimen requirements as evidenced by adequate sample collection, post-collection handling, and distribution to proper lab section. Properly labels laboratory/pathology specimens.

Adheres to all federal, state, the Joint Commission, OSHA, ACR, and any other applicable regulatory and/or accrediting agency guidelines. Demonstrates proper infection control practice and adheres to Infection Control Policies and Procedures and OSHA standards.

Minimum Education
Graduate from an Accredited Program in one or more medical imaging modalities as described below.

Minimum Work Experience
Required: 1 year experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
Preferred: 1+ years of experience as an Interventional Radiology Technologist.
