Job Description

You will provide reliable testing following our written Laboratory Work Orders and validated test methods. In these roles, consideration must also be given to safety and environmental regulations, efficiency and being in compliance with company procedures.

You will report to the Test Operations Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Setup tests per Laboratory Work Order (LWO) (debug test equipment, instrumentation and data acquisition systems)
  • Perform tests per LWO according to the written work instructions.
  • Setup and perform computer/data acquisition
  • Record the progress of UUT (receipt, start, complete and publish dates in addition to the results, test station and technician) in the LWO database
  • Generate test reports
  • Prepare test articles for return to test requestor, storage or customer
  • Verify instrument calibration via the Master Calibration Plan
  • Assist with measurement system calibration
  • Participate in fixture design and/or fabrication
  • Receive requisitioned products
  • Maintain test equipment, perform preventative maintenance and record repairs or modifications
  • Train others as determined by the Test Operations Supervisor/Manager in the operation of test equipment and test methods
  • Participate in non-conformance resolution activities
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area (5S)

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Lab Technicians must have:

  • The laboratories are team environments where good verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to multi-task and manage their activities in a quality driven yet time-sensitive environment
  • Good analytical judgment and the ability to work under pressure
  • Computer skills for spreadsheet, word processing, data entry, file management and reporting
  • Organizational skills with precise attention to detail
  • High level of initiative

 

Lab Technician (Entry):

  • Assigned to a lab technician to learn and become familiar with equipment, test procedures and administrative processes
  • Perform a variety of routine tasks to gain knowledge and apply learned skills to test procedures
  • Use Microsoft Excel and Word to perform calculations and generate test reports
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic operations
  • Assignments broaden in complexity with experience gained

Lab Technician I:

Same as Lab Technician (Entry) and:

  • Distinguished from the Lab Tech (Entry) in the scope and complexity of work assigned
  • Basic understanding of equipment and test procedures within their main responsibilities
  • Exercises some judgment in selecting appropriate established guidelines, methods or procedures to follow
  • Dependent on others to assist with troubleshooting activities
  • May provide guidance to less experienced technicians.

 

Lab Technician II:

Same as Lab Technician I and:

  • Proficient understanding of equipment and test procedures within their main responsibilities
  • Beginning to expand knowledge and capability to operate equipment and test procedures, outside main responsibilities, within their department and in other laboratory departments
  • Able to perform basic troubleshooting activities
  • May provide guidance to less experienced technicians.

Lab Technician III:

Same as Lab Technician II and:

  • The cross functionality and complexity of assigned work continues to increase as the level of supervision or guidance decreases
  • Complete understanding of all equipment and test procedures within their main responsibilities
  • Capable and qualified to operate equipment and test procedures, outside main responsibilities, within their department and in other laboratory departments
  • Able to perform advanced troubleshooting activities
  • May directly guide to less experienced technicians

Senior Lab Technician:

Same as Lab Technician III and:

  • Possess a significant level of testing experience, technical expertise and is able to serve as a technical advisor to the entire department
  • Proficient understanding of all test equipment and test procedures they are directly responsible for operating
  • Assist test engineering in the development of new test equipment and/or procedures
  • May be responsible for the review and publication of test reports
  • May directly guide to less experienced technicians

Lead Lab Technician:

Same as Senior Lab Technician and:

  • Accountable for an entire laboratory department (Thermal, Structural, Vehicle or HVAC&R)
  • Assists the Test Operations Supervisor/Manager with the management of laboratory backlogs
  • May be involved in daily supply purchasing activities
  • May directly guide to less experienced technicians and have limited responsibilities for coordinating scheduled and assignments

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

All positions described in this document, with the exception of the Lab Technician (Entry), have a minimum pre-requisite of an Associate Degree in an Electrical, Mechanical, and Hydraulic, Automotive or a related discipline. In some cases, substantial technical experience may substitute for a degree.

Lab Technician (Entry): Working on an Associate Degree in a technical discipline with limited work experience, or 2+ years equivalent experience in a technical discipline.

 

Lab Technician I: An Associate Degree in a technical discipline plus up to 4 years of technical work experience, or 3+ years equivalent experience in a technical discipline.

 

Lab Technician II: An Associate Degree in a technical discipline plus 4+ years of technical work experience, or 7+ years equivalent experience in a technical discipline.

 

Lab Technician III: An Associate Degree in a technical discipline plus 8+ years of technical work experience, or 11+ years equivalent experience in a technical discipline

 

Sr. Lab Technician: An Associate Degree in a technical discipline plus 14+ years of technical work experience, or 17+ years equivalent experience in a technical discipline

 

Lead Lab Technician: An Associate Degree in a technical discipline plus 14+ years of technical work experience and formal leadership training or experience or 17+ years equivalent experience in a technical discipline and formal leadership training or experience.

 

TRAVEL:

Travel for field data acquisition may occasionally be required.
