Environmental Health Co-teacher & Community Capacity Builder
AmeriCorps Member

Member Position – Summary and Purpose
The purpose of this role is to serve as a co-teacher implementing after school and summer camp programs, youth day treatment and family programs related to environment and health. Additional services of this position include enhancing community building through community garden oversight and neighborhood engagement. This AmeriCorps Member will provide services alongside the Environmental Health Educator in the development and implementation of educational programming, and alongside the Neighborhood Revitalization Coordinator to engage in community event planning, and community garden coordination and oversight.
Member Duties and Responsibilities
  • Environmental Health Education Co-teacher:
  • Plan and implement educational, fun, and creative activities that align to curriculum outcomes for children related to environment and health.
  • Member will plan and co-lead lessons and activities in an outdoor setting for children participating in the after-school programs, summer camp, and Child and Adolescent Day Treatment programs to support children with mental illness.
  • Develop and implement new family programs related to environment and health.
 
  • Community Garden Coordination and Oversight:
  • Provide oversight and coordination of community gardens, and partner schools gardens. This includes advertising the gardens, enrolling community gardeners, offering community support and answering questions, coordinating garden events for the gardeners, and maintaining the area around the gardens.



 
  • Event Planning:
  • Collaborate with the Neighborhood Revitalization Coordinator to plan and coordinate community events and programs to promote gardening, use of green spaces, and to bring the community together through innovative COVID safe approaches.
 
  • Overall
  • Lead or co-lead education, advocacy, and/or outreach programs to expand capacity of the Dept. of Environmental Health & Community Wellness
  • Collect and report data of individuals served on a change of behavior or intent to change behavior for a healthier lifestyle.
  • Member will have the opportunity for mentorship, collaboration projects and event planning across Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers.
  • Member will avoid all prohibited activities while serving or representing AmeriCorps
Qualifications and Experience
  • High school graduate, GED recipient, or working toward attaining a high school diploma or GED during the term of service. Members must agree to obtain either a diploma or GED before using an education award.
  • 18 years old or older, no upper age limit
  • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens
  • Pass a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Bilingual – Spanish fluency
  • Experience and interest in working with kids
  • Must have willingness and comfort working outside
  • Comfort with public speaking and making phone calls
  • Microsoft Word required, experience with Excel and/or other databases preferred
  • Ability to have flexible schedule and occasionally work weekends or evenings

Line of Supervision
The Environmental Health Co-teacher & Community Capacity Builder AmeriCorps Member will report directly to Environmental Health Educator
