Overview

Under general supervision, the Mechanical Technician is responsible for performing Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) functions, Plumbing preventative maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

HVAC Job Responsilibitles

    Installing, maintaining and repairing ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment
  • Diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults for HVAC systems
  • Perform Preventive Maintenance, Cleaning, adjusting and repairing HVAC systems
  • Keeping daily logs and records of all maintenance functions
  • Plan shutdowns for maintenance and repair pumps including chill water, heating water and condensation pumps
  • Order and maintain parts needed to repair and maintain HVAC Equipment
  • Assemble and connect pipes and ducts used in piping refrigerants, steam, hot water, and warm or conditioned air
  • Overhaul and repair pumps, compressors, controls, piping ducts, and other equipment used in heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems
  • Calibrate thermostats
  • Repair and maintain a variety of refrigeration unit systems
  • Inspect and test systems to verify system compliance with plans and specifications or to detect and locate malfunctions
  • Perform frequent inspection checks and regular maintenance on boiler systems and related valves, gauges, piping, and other equipment
  • Inspect water, gas, and other fluid levels inside boilers and related equipment, making adjustments to fluids as necessary to keep systems operating at peak levels
  • Adjust valves and boiler controls as needed to control the amount of pressure in the system and keep the boiler system functioning safely

Plumbing Job Responsibilities

  • Assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment
  • Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observe pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks
  • Review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures
  • Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters, and fixtures such as sinks and toilets, using hand and power tools
  • Cut openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings, using hand and power tools
  • Study building plans and inspect structures to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations, and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical/Vocational education in HVAC/Plumbing/Piping Mechanics is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills required, proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • At least 5 - 10 years' experience in HVAC, Boiler Operation and Plumbing functions
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical blueprints
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to run copper piping and PVC
  • Strong Ability to organize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all unit of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values
  • Knowledge of refrigeration cycles to including; identifying components in advanced refrigeration circuits, diagnosing and correcting problems in the refrigeration circuit
  • Knowledge of refrigeration recovery, evacuation and charging, understands the installation and sizing of refrigerant piping
  • Knowledgeable in diagnosing problems in the heating system using a gas pressure test and other devices for routine maintenance and to troubleshoot and repair
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of temperature and humidity measurement and control in air conditioning units

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffolding
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at heights as required
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more
