The A.O. Smith Corporation, a world leader in designing and manufacturing of water heaters, water treatment and air purification systems and an equal opportunity employer headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, is seeking a Cooperative Education (Co-op) student for a position at its Corporate Technology Center in Milwaukee, WI. The mission of the Corporate Technology Center is to conduct research and development to help bring new products and processes to market and to improve A.O. Smith's existing products and processes.

Primary Function

The position is designed to fit with the alternating school & work semester schedules established by many engineering colleges.

The position is to provide a hands-on industrial experience and complement the student's learning and academic experience and is structured to help broadly prepare the student for an engineering career.

Responsibilities
  1. Assist in the development of alternative materials for water heaters and water treatment systems.
  2. Run and analyze experiments to test materials and processes.
  3. Metallographic preparation and analysis of various metals.
  4. Mechanical testing and analysis of materials.
  5. Assist/conduct failure analyses of product components.
  6. Assist in the development of new joining processes.
  7. Provide technical assistance on materials and related process issues when requested.
  8. Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a BS, Materials Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering program at an accredited university.
  • A minimum of a sophomore standing and able to co-op for at least 3 terms.
  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in major related coursework
  • Conscientious & dependable, with the ability to work on small teams as well as independently.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and MS Office Products (Word, Excel, etc).
  • A sincere interest in materials/metallurgical engineering career.

Minimum of 1 year related work experience
