Case Western Reserve University is collaborating with Kaplan University Partners to provide precollege students with exceptional, career-minded enrichment/certificate programs taught online by world-class experts from Case Western Reserve University and the emerging Origins Sciences field.
Where did we come from? How did we get here? Where are we going? The new field of Origins Sciences is finding fascinating new answers to these age-old questions. This course gives students an inside look at these questions and the new field of Origins Sciences and studies concepts drawn from astronomy, mathematics, physics, planetary science, geology, biology, paleontology, anthropology, cognitive science, and more to address issues such as the self-organization of ecosystems and the bidirectional impact of life on the geophysical evolution of a planet.
Origins will help students think across artificial boundaries to learn, to question and to discover, to answer questions about the origin and evolution of simple and complex systems from the big bang to the human mind.
Students will also receive guidance from Case Western Reserve University mentors who will provide encouragement and direction on assignments, inspire and motivate students to succeed and offer brainstorming and ideation help as students prepare for their final project.
Role Description
Kaplan University Partners (KUP) is seeking Case Western Reserve University students and alumni to act as part-time mentors to precollege students enrolled in online programs. Course mentors will engage and support students throughout the course. Mentors also provide support and encouragement at predetermined moments throughout the course, using group online video conferencing and digital messaging tools such as email, chat, or SMS. Finally, mentors advise and guide students on course assignments.
In preparation for the role, mentors will complete a paid training program (3 hours of self-paced modules and exercises as well as a live component), receive support from KUP staff, and both give and receive support as part of the course mentor team.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide async guidance, feedback and answer questions
Lead group sessions with students to review progress, ask key questions and ensure course progress
Review course assignments, provide direction and answer questions
Answer ad hoc questions throughout the course session
Brainstorm and ideate with students on their final project idea(s)
Be familiar with all course material
Check-in with the program staff at specified periods
Report back on student engagement as requested
Time Commitment:
Approximately 3 hours per week of mentor-led live group student interaction for the duration of the course (course lengths vary)
Approximately 1-2 hours per week of async engagement, feedback and small operational tasks*
*time commitment will vary based on number of students assigned
Qualifications:
Strong passion for all aspects of medicine
Experience working with adolescents/teens ages 13-17
Passion for helping others achieve their goals with an emphasis on delighting and engaging students
Strong interest and undergraduate-level proficiency in the medical field
Ability to work in the absence of direct supervisory relationships
Demonstrated ability to learn and work in digital communications platforms such as email, Zoom, Google Hangouts or Canvas
Pass background check
Authorization to work in the United States
