Overview

The role of Production Supervisor - Machine Shop reports to the Production Manager of the Machine Shop. This role supervises and coordinates activities of roughly 50 associatess engaged in machining blades and other components needed in the production of clippers and trimmers. Responsibilities include but not limited to; Managing departmental KPI's (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost), enforcement of company policy, ability to work through preventative and corrective actions, engage employees regularly, promote 6S in the machine shop and manage metrics around the 6S program.

3rd Shift Core Hours: 10:00 pm - 6:00 am (Sun - Thurs)

Safety

  • Responsible for communicating company policies with associates and enforcing all safety regulations and policies.
  • Ensure adherence to PPE standards based on job assignments of associates.
  • Assures safety audits are completed on a regular basis per utilization of Leader Standard Work.
  • Incident reporting to be completed in timely manor (same day same shift) and escalated as necessary to leadership/safety/HR.
  • Lead root cause/corrective action of incidents/accidents with production team and support staff.

Quality

  • Work with quality, team leads and operators to develop and implement quality ownership at the process.
  • Guide and support 1st piece approval process of area operators and QA department as necessary.
  • Inspects work in progress and finished products throughout shift.
  • Responsible for product quality through the production area.
  • Ensure in process checks (IPS) are being completed per the specification and frequency required by each operation.
  • Participate in root cause/corrective action investigation of part defects, NCMRs and scrap creation.
  • Support team leads in training of operators based on root cause findings of returned internal/external customer parts.
  • Participate in process auditing along with ISO auditing.
  • Ensure adherence to work instructions throughout work cells.
  • Visually inspect work pieces to detect flaws. Where required, measure work piece with micrometers, calipers, and/or other gauges and complete IPS sheets.
  • Ensure training documents are up to date and audited regularly.

Production

  • Understand company and department objectives and coordinate the team to meet or exceed the established KPI's and Metrics.
  • Determine best production sequences for optimal material utilization, production efficiencies and to minimize production down time in collaboration with planner/scheduler, production supervisors and team leads.
  • With team leads, assure that plans and guidelines are in place for the next shift as to what schedules are to be produced next and machinery status.
  • Assure that daily production schedules are met to achieve Delivery attainment metrics.
  • Ensure labor and production is reported accurately. Approve payroll and post transactions daily.
  • Determine labor requirements and set overtime schedules for operators weekly/monthly, work with other Supervisors and Manager as needed.
  • Audit and assure that schedules, hourly production rates are met, and MDI (Gemba) boards are updated daily.
  • Job Preparation and Setup: Per routings, may be responsible for selecting and applying proper belts, wheels, wear plates, grits, taps, inserts, holders, etc. to perform minor setup or adjustments or otherwise ready the work operation. May require the use of hand tools.
  • Machine Operation: Follow established procedures to load and unload parts. Use buttons, levers, or foot pedals as appropriate to activate machinery. Observe machine operation for proper operation.
  • Execute the schedule in the production area and identify any issues for schedule changes or interruption i.e. downtime, missing components, people etc --- issues to be communicated to production supervisors, team leads on other shifts.
  • Ensure documentation for daily production is accurate prior to sending out communication to support staff and incoming shifts.

Leadership

  • Lead by example in keeping the work area clean and organized. (Promote 6S and manage)
  • Develop team leads' abilities to build strength in leadership roles by coaching and mentoring.
  • Participate in daily start of shift meetings for departments in areas of responsibility (Team Huddles)
  • Lead and coordinate daily shift change transition regarding production hand-off (Tier 1 meetings).
  • Ability to handle responsibilities and effectively interface with internal and external customers.
  • Lead implementation of activities in production areas to meet a safe work environment, production goals, quality, and cost objectives. (KPI's)
  • Keep Supervisors and Manager informed of all pertinent information and developments as related to the performance of the team.
  • Support job rotation & process knowledge growth for the team.
  • Support new and developing production associates.
  • Work cross functionally with other departments throughout the organization.
  • Review MRO inventories and place replenishment orders as needed; copy all supervisors and managers on orders.
  • Create, track and coordinate work order requests with tool room and maintenance. Establish priority for the repairs.
  • Provide leadership coverage for both machine shop and assembly departments when required.
  • Ensure that daily schedules are being followed according to order sequence and priorities as set forth by management/planning.
  • Complete associate assessments and annual performance reviews.
  • Conduct new employee 45 and 85 day performance reviews, provide regular and constructive feedback.
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.

Continuous Improvement

  • Develop, implement, and utilize standard production reports and methods.
  • In collaboration with the department manager develop and lead continuous improvement teams.
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and quality of product that support company cost savings initiatives.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, work crew and foster employee empowerment.
  • Ownership of process improvements, changes to assure smooth shop floor implementation and continued use.
  • Perform activities to ensure gains made through improvement events are sustained.
  • Support the use of the MDI boards and maintain daily.
  • PDCA or DMAIC activities -Participate in daily, weekly monthly activities - opportunities for continuous improvement Miscellaneous: As requested, participate in problem solving groups, experimental operations, or new equipment task groups.
  • Embrace CI, Lean, and 6S methodologies in the assigned areas.
  • Ability to utilize and participate in: RCA, Leading Rapid Improvement Events, and A3 methodology to resolve issues throughout production.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in business or manufacturing strongly preferred. Three to five years in a leadership position. Experience preferably in an industrial manufacturing environment, ideally in machining. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing Basics; Internal Lean and Six Sigma Certifications will be required.
  • Ability to use/read a tape measure, calipers, micrometer and interpret the findings.
  • Ability to read and properly interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to work at an average level in Microsoft Office applications.
