Position Summary:

The Mashgiach assumes responsibility for checking all deliveries for Kashrut compliance and maintaining Kashrut policies while following company standards as established by Supervisor and Head Rabbi of Kosher services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • When checking in deliveries the Mashgiach is responsible to assure that proper Hashgachah is present per current standards. Any standards changes will first be informed verbally to assure standards observed, then followed up in written form. No variance from this policy is acceptable without prior approval from your supervisor or Head Rabbi of Kosher Services.
  • Mashgiach must follow all Kashrus policies in each facility. Also, as need arises, teach and inform any and all staff members of any existing policy and new policies when they are instituted. When new policies are established Mashgiach must observe staff and be sure the new standards are being followed.
  • Mashgiach, at any time throughout their shift, is responsible to ensure that all necessary cooking equipment is started by a Mashgiach. This includes but is not limited to the following items or as instructed by your supervisor: All electric stove tops or ovens; regular gas ovens; alto shams; soup kettles; tilt braziers; any sterno flames; catering equipment; relighting pilots on any equipment as needed and on stove tops once a month.
  • It is the Mashgiach’s job to wash and check all fruits and vegetables per the printed policy. When there is a doubt about any particular item consult with supervisor as to current policy standards or Head Rabbi of Kosher Services if supervisor is unavailable.
  • Mashgiach must check  throughout the day: around dishwasher to make sure there is no mixing up of items per standards; storerooms, coolers and freezers to look for items out of place or not meeting our Kosher standards--- when in doubt the item must be pulled and brought to the office for consultation with supervisor; dining rooms before and during meal service to be sure proper settings are being used; that proper serving techniques per company policies are being followed and per our companies kosher standards; any locations where there is a meal program, special event that is kosher, board meetings, etc. This policy is for anytime there is kosher food with our dishes and equipment.
  • It is Mashgiach responsibility to communicate concerns and questions to their supervisor. Supervisor is also in contact with the Rabbi in charge of Kosher services. Some matters might take time to investigate and deal with head of Kosher Services.
  • Mashgiach is expected to be at ready and at work on time as scheduled. The Mashgiach is responsible to report to supervisor at the beginning of each and every shift even on same day.
  • Mashgiach, as a supervisor, may also be required to perform the following duties: write-ups for policy infractions, educating new dietary staff on Kashrus, attend education processes with staff member being educated on kosher violations, or other duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Mashgiach’s need to assist when necessary to put away deliveries while following corporate policies such as FIFO (first in first out), in a safe manner using proper lifting techniques, proper storage units, etc.
  • Mashgiach as a supervisor must be able to work independently and manage dietary staff and any other staff (i.e. new trainee’s, temporary staff, etc.).
Position Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year supervised food service experience in a skilled nursing facility, retirement facility, or residential service is preferred. 
  • Prior experience performing Mashgiach work (I.E. being Mashgiach, Rabbinical training in kosher, etc.) is preferred, but not necessary. 
  • Food handling certification (ServSafe) is required for this position. 
  • Demonstrates strong communication and relationship building skills with residents, and is able to explain residents' needs to others as needed for resident advocacy. 
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
