Job Description
Germantown Mutual Insurance Company is looking to add an experienced Underwriter to its Commercial Lines department!  This is an ideal role for someone with 5+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience who would enjoy being a key contributor in a solid company with a great reputation.  Depending on location and experience, we are able to offer a flexible combination of both in-person and remote work.

JOB SUMMARY
As a Commercial Lines Underwriter, you will manage a specific group of agents.  With the assistance of Associate Underwriters and Underwriter Assistants, you will review and investigate new business submissions, mid-term endorsement requests, and renewals, as well as determine acceptability for quoting, pricing, and binding within the company's underwriting guidelines and best practices.  You'll also have the opportunity to develop relationships with your agents through frequent agency visits and outings, such as Brewers tailgates with agents.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • You will manage an assigned book of business through the following functions -
    • Evaluate new business submissions by obtaining underwriting information through multiple sources.  Through analysis of the underwriting information, make underwriting decisions in accordance with the company's underwriting rules and best practices.
    • Evaluate renewal business as needed.  Obtain updated information on renewals in accordance with company guidelines.  Make decisions on renewal offers based on loss experience.
    • Evaluate in-force business through change requests, notifications from claims, inspection reports, etc.
    • Encourage and assist in the production of profitable commercial lines business by maintaining excellent working relationships with agents and company personnel.
    • Select, price, classify, and determine coverage terms of individual risks, following established company guidelines and philosophies.
    • Travel to assigned agencies to build on agency partnerships and promote products.
  • Exhibit thorough working knowledge of sound underwriting principles, policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Keep current on issues affecting our multiple property and casualty lines of business as well as the competitors and overall marketplace.  Attend industry conferences and education seminars related to our overall book of business.
  • Collaborate with other team members and mentor less experienced underwriters and support staff.
  • Address Agent questions through email and telephone correspondence as needed.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, & SKILLS
  • Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Five or more years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication, listening, interpersonal, customer service, and telephone skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers, including data entry, word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to interpret and manipulate data onto quotes and policies, with accuracy and focus.
