The Surgical Technologist's primary role is to assist surgeons in the FMLH operating rooms . They are responsible for preparing patients, OR rooms and equipment for surgical procedures. The ST works as a member of the team at the surgical field itself, handing instruments to the surgeon as necessary and helping to manipulate the patient and the wound to enable the surgeon to work effectively, as well as receiving instruments and supplies from the circulator.

Surgical Technologists work under the direction of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective care of our patients during the surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Most Surgical Techs eventually choose or are selected for a service pod. In others words, they specialize. This is an important aspect of their development. We see our Surgical Techs as professionals and we are invested in seeing them deepen their skills-in other words, moving from novice to expert in particular procedures-as well as broaden their skills-learning new procedures and services.
