Overview

The Tool Designer will design complicated tools, jigs, fixtures, dies, attachments, adapters, etc. for machining, assembling, inspecting or other applications.

Responsibilities

  • Main point of contact, and in house expert on specialty, tooling, and cutters required.
  • Gatekeeper on company confidential cutter geometries critical to other processes.
  • Design complicated fixture, die, and machine component drawings, prepares layout and detail drawings. Use Autocad and Solidworks to perform applicable drafting work.
  • Study specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data.
  • Collaborate with engineering and Machine Shop associates to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost.
  • Analyze requirements, methods and specifications, etc. to determine and develop the most economical and effective design. Select proper locating points and securing methods to avoid distortion of materials, offset tool thrusts or other factors affecting tolerances.
  • Study existing tooling and methods for the purpose of altering or replacing to facilitate a more economical and up to date application.
  • Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configuration.
  • Selects standard items to incorporate into tool design.
  • Utilize outside suppliers for design and manufacture of milling cutters. Analyze cutter options and costs.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining machine shop process drawings.
  • Support systems to monitor and improve OEE.
  • Support utilization of the A3 problem solving techniques.
  • Incorporate lean manufacturing principles into the process of designing and building tooling.
  • Responsible for running and maintaining 3D printing machines
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree (A.A./A.S.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and a minimum of three years of experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD, Solid Works or similar software.
