Job Description
Position Overview

Under the direction of the Engineering Supervisor, the Mechanical Design Engineer designs Gleason products, meeting or exceeding company production and quality standards, and meeting customer delivery requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Design Gleason products, meeting engineering standards, applicable codes, customer specifications, and within cost and schedule constraints.
2. Review and interpret customer specifications and sales agreements.
3. Ensure conformance to ASME Codes, NEMA and company standards for quality and manufacturability.
4. Create and maintain 3D solid models, design layouts, and production drawings using CAD tools.
5. Redesign standard products, improving quality and productivity, while reducing costs.
6. Evaluate and select components and parts for the products.
7. Develop working relationships with all shop departments to address and resolve problems and to develop better cooperation for working together toward producing the highest quality products at the lowest possible cost.
8. Act as technical resource for product field support of customers, service personnel and field sales, assisting in addressing and resolving questions and problems.
9. Participate on cross-functional teams to address and resolve manufacturing, design and quality problems, and ensure the continuous, on-going improvement of processes and methods.
10. Suggest ideas for new products.
11. Stay current in new developments in the industry.
12. Keep informed of new parts or methods to improve products or product designs.
13. Follow all housekeeping procedures.
14. Comply with all quality and safety regulations.
15. Enter and maintain material master data and assembly BOMs using business application (SAP).
16. Process sales orders through engineering using business application (SAP).
17. Process engineering release notices for new products and revisions utilizing company procedures and forms.
18. Process quality discrepancy reports (DR) and shop floor suggestions (FS) pertaining to product design.
19. Participate in Kaizen quality events as requested relevant to product design and manufacturing.

Skills and Experience

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical specifications, professional journals, and blueprints. Ability to write reports and documentation. Ability to communicate effectively with vendors, customers and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to perform structural analysis, component stress and strain analysis, and calculate horsepower and torque calculations related to electric motors and gear boxes.

Computer Skills
Proficiency with 3D CAD design tools, familiarity with Autodesk Inventor desired. Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Education Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering
