Job Description
Job Title: Curatorial Assistant
Department:  Public Programs / Department of Community Dialogue
Reports to: Curator of Community Dialogue
Status: Full-time, Salaried, Exempt
EEO Classification: Office Clerical Non-Union


Objective:  The Curatorial Assistant for the Department of Community Dialogue will play a vital role in centering community engagement in all adult programming at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The Department of Community Dialogue is a new department at the Milwaukee Art Museum that will be responsible for designing, implementing, and assessing adult programming at MAM and building sustainable partnerships and collaborations with BIPOC audiences.
The Curatorial Assistant will support the Department of Community Dialogue in shaping adult programming from initial concept to execution while also providing administrative and curatorial support to the Curator of Community Programs. The Curatorial Assistant is a thoughtful, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and equity-centered administrator and communicator.  Their support of the Department will involve working across the institution to build and maintain adult programming while also overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Department of Community Dialogue.

The position is primarily responsible for working individually, as part of a team, and across departments to advance the Milwaukee Art Museum’s mission to create robust community programming, make art relevant to our communities, and build sustainable community partnerships particularly with BIPOC members of our community.

Duties:
 
  • Assist the Curator of Community Dialogue on all projects.
  • Provide curatorial and administrative assistance to the Curator of Community Dialogue, including managing calendar and travel (as needed).
  • Provide curatorial administrative support to the Department of Community Dialogue (e.g., maintaining programming schedule)
  • Act as a liaison between the Department of Community Dialogue and the Education Department, Curatorial Department, Development, and other departments as needed.
  • Support research on a variety of initiatives including programming and audience trends both within Milwaukee and beyond.
  • Collaborate on cross-departmental teams in program planning, execution, and reporting on adult programs.
  • As needed, register participants for public programs; generate confirmation letters, rosters and ID tags.
  • Assist in compiling a variety of narrative and statistical reports, locate sources of information by devising forms needed to secure data; determine proper format for finished reports; including program participation statistics, monthly, quarterly, and yearly department statistics. Reconcile Public Programs statistics with Museum overall statistics monthly.
  • Establish, maintain, revise and update departmental databases including mailing lists for community groups and guest artists. Assist with promoting program offerings to the public.
  • Provide secretarial support for various advisory group meetings such as the Community Task Force and Native Initiatives at MAM, or other meetings as necessary by scheduling meetings, preparing meeting materials, room set-up, record and distribute minutes and any other follow-up material.
  • Generate monthly Public Programs credit card reconciliation report for Finance. 
  • Maintain department’s supplies.
  • Escort guests to meetings, galleries, etc.
  • Supervise and direct interns as needed.
  • Member of Weekly Operations team.
  • Maintain budgets and process all invoices.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the community.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the Milwaukee Art Museum.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Experience developing and maintaining databases.
  • Excellent organization skills – ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to use MS Office and  Google products (e.g., Gmail, Google Meets, Google Spreadsheets; Google Slides; Excel; PowerPoint;  etc.).
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences and staff members and to communicate ideas in a variety of ways.
  • Ability to self-manage and work alongside a team and/or supervisor.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Willingness to dream new ideas / concepts.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Initiative, vision, and execution of ideas.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual/Multilingual with language(s) included but not limited to: Any Native Language of the Americans (e.g., Ojibwe, Oneida, Ho-Chunk); American Sign Language; Black Vernacular English; Haitian Kreyòl; Hmong; French; German; Spanish; etc.
  • Preferred Qualifications: A minimum of 2 – 3 years of experience (organizing; administrative support; community building).
