DescriptionPark Rangers manage crowds, work alone, explain County policies to park patrons and occasionally work with law enforcement.Positions work from early May to mid-September with hours varying from 10 to 40 hours per weekincluding weekends, evenings and holidays. Limited year round shifts will be available for weekends/special events, during the off season.Example of Duties* Rangers participate in beach safety checks scheduled by lifeguards.* Assist with all missing persons at beach and any other emergencies at beaches.* Provide crowd control during major events.* Help park cars and control traffic at major events.* Report any hazards to park maintenance staff.* Intervene with, and de-escalate park patron arguments.* At Menomonee and Fox Brook Parks - dedicated beach rangers patrol beach and beach house area on foot throughout swim season.* Vehicle and foot patrol of campgrounds to watch for unsafe behavior.* Remind patrons of leashed dogs rule.* Watch for underage drinking or excessive drinking.* Direct boat and vehicle traffic at busy boat ramps.* Inform patrons of weather alerts.* Help keep the peace in campgrounds.* Sell firewood.* Are the eyes and ears of the park system at times when other staff is not on duty.* Complete reports (day sheets) of all observations made during each shift.* As needed, fill out Incident, Accident, Employee Report of Injury and Waukesha County Park System Accident / Injury Reports.* As needed, perform basic janitorial tasks when maintenance staff is not on duty.* CPR/AED and First Aid certification will be provided.Minimum Qualifications* Must be 18 years of age and have at least an 8th grade education.* Requires a valid Wisconsin drivers license with good driving record.* Ability to write legibly.* Ability to communicate clearly and exhibit excellent customer service skills.* Ability to work in all kinds of weather.* Ability to manage crowds.* Ability to work alone.* Ability to explain County policies to park patrons.* Ability to work closely with local law enforcement, other Rangers, their supervisors and with park maintenance staff (in person and over a two-way radio).Supplemental InformationA Waukesha County Park Ranger is not a Law Enforcement position.Some training of Park Rangers will be provided by Waukesha County Sheriff's Department, County Human Resources Division and/or Parks Supervisor. Park rangers may occasionally work with Waukesha County Sheriff Deputies to enforce park rules.Shift schedules:You will be expected to work evenings and weekends* Weeknights (5pm - 11pm)* Weekends (11am - 5pm; 5pm - midnight +)* Beaches (11am - 7pm weekdays and weekends* Holidays (same as weekends)* Special events (could be on 6 or 12-hour shifts for a 24 hour/day coverage)Scheduling for shifts* Rangers are required to submit an overview of their availability for the entire season by April 14, 2021. Details on this will be given at your orientation.* Shift assignment changes will occur from time to time.* Depending on the Park or the activity level you may be required to work alone.Uniform and Equipment* All Uniforms are at your own expense with an average first year investment of about $200. Keep all your receipts on your uniform purchases for potential reimbursement.* Park Ranger Badges are issued by the County and requires a $50.00 deposit (Badge is required to be on Uniform).* Badges must be returned upon termination, refund of deposit will be mailed to you.At the end of the season, if you fulfilled your requirements, Waukesha County will reimburse up to $100.00 of your uniform purchase.
