Position: Dean of Instruction

Reports To: School Principals

Position Overview: The Dean of Instruction (DOI) is a school-based position that focuses on supporting teachers and instructional leaders to deliver the most rigorous and joyful academic experience for our scholars through observation and feedback, data-driven instruction, curriculum and assessment, professional development, building team culture through strong leadership skills, and contributions to organization-wide initiatives. In conjunction with the Principals, the Dean of Instruction (DOI) will implement a professional development program to guide assigned instructional staff members in becoming master teachers.

Responsibilities:

Data Driven Instruction

  • Facilitate assessment cycles including scheduling, quality assurance of assessment materials, and teacher/scholar preparation with the support of school leadership

  • Conduct deep analysis of data in order to lead effective analysis meetings with teachers/content areas

  • Create grade level/content area action plans and materials to address data

  • Execute data meetings based on daily scholar work samples

  • Monitor grade-level progress against assessment cycle interim assessments

  • Plan the instructional schedule and curriculum in partnership with principals and network support team based on school-specific data and results.

  • Ensure that systematic interventions occur whenever scholars are struggling; monitor quality and effectiveness of interventions to ensure they are rigorous, disciplined, and high-impact.

  • Write thorough, thoughtful, actionable annual growth plans for all the teachers in your portfolio.

Observation and Feedback

  • Conduct daily observations and plan/execute feedback meetings using the "See It. Name It. Do It" framework that lead to teacher and instructional leader development and support implementation of action steps

  • Provide real-time feedback to teachers during instruction

  • Identify clear learning goals for teachers, create and execute on development plans using a range of coaching strategies to improve teacher effectiveness.

  • Observe lessons and provide on-going, specific, actionable, positive and constructive feedback that ensures teachers can implement the feedback to grow in instructional planning and delivery and foster a feeling of shared vision and goals.

  • Contribute to teachers' mid-year reviews

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Own organization-wide curriculum and assessment work based on content expertise such as lesson planning, assessment revisions and review, collaborative scoring, and/or network analysis

  • Effectively plan both full units and individual lessons with teachers, guiding them through the entire backwards planning process.

Professional Development

  • Plan and deliver high-quality professional development that trains and orients staff members in HOPE's curricular systems and key pedagogical issues

  • Plan and execute team meetings for grade-level or content-area staff

  • Accurately identify and prioritize professional development needs through careful analysis of scholar data

Mission-Alignment

  • Demonstrate a relentless drive to improve the minds and lives of scholars in and out of school

  • Build professional relationships with teachers that help in their development

  • Collaborate with the campus-wide and network-wide staff to maximize the ability of our schools to support scholars' academic and socio-emotional development

  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned

  • Reinforce the mission with staff and inspire them to act on the mission every single day; exude urgency, excellence, and optimism.

  • Reflect on actions and adjust behavior and systems accordingly; ask regularly for feedback; model humility and admit mistakes; seek out thought partners.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of essential content, standards, and highly effective teaching strategies in elementary and middle school grades.

  • History of effectively coaching both new and experienced teachers.

  • Strong instructional, classroom management and discipline skills.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and "roll-up-my-sleeves" attitude.

Education & Work Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree; Master's degree preferred
  • Willingness to attain WI Teacher Certification.
  • If you are selected for an in-person interview you will be required to produce teaching credentials (if required for this position) and proof of your highest degree obtained in order to participate in the interview.
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience with a track record of high scholar achievement in an urban setting
