Job Description
The Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) Department at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites nominations and applications for an open full-time faculty position beginning September 1, 2021.  The department seeks an individual who will complement and strengthen our outstanding faculty.  The candidate’s primary focus will be structural engineering, and the preferred candidate will be willing and able to teach fundamental course work in other specialties as necessary (e.g., geotechnical engineering course work).

MSOE, a highly ranked undergraduate and master’s level institution of learning founded in 1903, is in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The institution serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of engineering, mathematics, business, nursing and communications.  The university prides itself on having more laboratories than classrooms on campus, showing our commitment to experiential learning.  University faculty are primarily evaluated on their teaching excellence.

The CAECM Department maintains a strong student-centered focus and is committed to educating future leaders in engineering design and construction.  The Department currently serves more than 350 undergraduate and graduate students, has 15 full-time faculty members of various rank and expertise, and has experienced growth with the addition of the recently accredited Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree program.  Degree offerings include Bachelor and Master of Science in Architectural Engineering, Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Construction Management.  Several specializations are available, including structural engineering, mechanical and electrical systems engineering for buildings, environmental and water resources engineering, transportation engineering and construction management.  In addition, the department collaborates with other departments on campus to provide broad educational opportunities for all students.

The following attributes and credentials are required of the candidate:
  • A master’s degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering or a closely related field
  • An undergraduate degree, preferably ABET accredited, in Civil or Architectural Engineering or a closely related field
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Wisconsin, or the ability to obtain licensure within two years of hire
  • Several (preferably five or more) years of practical structural engineering design experience in a U.S. based company or U.S. governmental body
  • A strong commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate and master’s level teaching
  • Willing and able to teach course work at all levels, from first year courses to graduate courses, primarily within the candidate’s structural engineering specialty (e.g., structural analysis, steel design, concrete design, etc.) but also fundamental courses (e.g., statics, mechanics of materials, soil mechanics, engineering graphics, etc.) as necessary and as assigned by the Department Chair
  • Willing to participate in departmental and institutional activities, such as academic advising, assessment initiatives, institutional service, or other activities as assigned
In addition, the following attributes and credentials are strongly preferred:
  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Civil or Architectural Engineering or a closely related field
  • Additional specialty licensure and/or certification, such as a Structural Engineer (S.E.) license, a Professional Geologist (P.G.) license or LEED Certification
  • Able and willing to teach courses in other specialty areas (e.g., geotechnical engineering, construction materials, surveying)
  • An ability and desire to advise fourth-year students in their undergraduate capstone projects and master’s students in their graduate capstone projects
  • Membership in one or more professional societies, with a desire to pursue leadership roles within those societies
  • Able and willing to collaborate with other departmental faculty and other academic units on campus, including student organizations
  • A commitment to lifelong learning by means of professional development, applied research, publication and/or engineering practice
  • A commitment to inclusiveness for all students in teaching, learning and advising
  • An energetic, humble, positive attitude with an approachable educational style
It is expected that the finalist’s appointment be made at the Assistant Professor rank, but outstanding candidates will be considered for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank.  Academic rank and salary are commensurate on the candidate’s prior experience and qualifications.
When applying, please upload a single PDF file. A complete application includes:

  2. Complete curriculum vitae
  3. A one to two page statement on the candidate’s teaching philosophy
  4. Names, affiliations, phone numbers and email addresses for a minimum of three professional references, with a very brief description of relationship between the candidate and referee
