Job Description
At Northwestern Mutual, we are strong, innovative and growing. We invest in our people. We care and make a positive difference.

There is not one American Dream - there are 300 million of them. At Northwestern Mutual, we're changing the way people think about financial planning. We're redefining and disrupting the industry and changing people's financial lives with better experiences, better design, and better technology. We believe in and build inclusive workplaces, where every voice is heard, and diverse perspectives are welcomed. We are looking for someone like you.

Northwestern Mutual is looking for a talented Senior Product Manager to help shape and lead a transformational effort for our digital products in our Consumer Products team. This individual will be on the ground working across Engineering, Design, Senior Leadership and key business stakeholders and will own the products from ideation to delivery.

What you'll do:

  • Play a fundamental role in building useful tools and effecting meaningful change for our Northwestern Mutual clients.
  • Become an advocate for our users, help define business/user goals of your features and product area(s), as well as develop the user stories that will serve as the foundation for what we build.
  • Collaborate in a deeply cross-functional way and develop relationships with engineers, designers, and other internal stakeholders: Roll up your sleeves and put your heads together to brainstorm requirements for new features and solution through thorny bugs.
  • Make data-driven decisions by getting to know your end users: Perform and use research to inform decisions and measure your success.
  • Prioritize issues and bugs on live, user-facing products, and document functionality and release information as necessary.
  • Build day-to-day like a start-upincrementally and iterativelywith snacks, dogs, and a casual atmosphere but with the network and resources of an enterprise, Fortune 100 company.
  • Work with a talented, mission-driven, fun-loving team who values your input and your individuality.

What you'll need:

  • Empathy for the end user: You are curious and compassionate. You have strong intuition about what makes a great product, but you also rely on qualitative and quantitative feedback to drive direction.
  • Listening skills: You seek out the opinions of others to inform your decisions but can defend your own when challenged. You're open to shifting your stance on something when you uncover new information.
  • Technical chops or digital fluency: You don't need to be a software engineer, but you should be able to assess tradeoffs between technologies.
  • Bias for data-driven action: You know how to leverage data to make educated decisions when confronted by ambiguity. You may not have all the answers up front, but you figure out how to find them and ask the right questions.
  • Ability to learn quickly and think strategically: You can break down complex problems into smaller, actionable steps. You're ready to jump right in and get your feet wet. You're able to see the big picture and identify opportunities that strengthen the end-to-end experience.
  • Attention to detail: You are organized and pause to reflect and double check yourself so important details don't slip through the cracks.
  • A knack for anticipation: You anticipate next steps and can manage multiple work streams in a fast-paced environment and shift priorities if you need to.
  • Storytelling and communication skills: You're comfortable when presenting to large groups, whether that's helping colleagues understand prioritization or drivers, convincing people to run towards goals, and managing multiple stakeholders across teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering preferred
  • 4+ years of experience in an analytical, dynamic, entrepreneurial role within software product management, management consulting, finance, a rotational/management training program, or startup company
  • Good understanding of technical concepts and consideration in building complex web applications, systems integration and comfort in working closely with engineers.
  • Knowledge of financial products and Financial Services and/or Tech experience strongly preferred
  • Previous experience building engaging and intuitive digital experiences on investment products
  • Agile product management experience
  • Ability to excel in a team environment
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving ability
  • Effective oral, presentation, and written communication skills
  • Able to gain the confidence of customer executives and senior management team
  • Ability to act autonomously
  • Highest standards of ethical and professional behavior, consistent with the company's values and business conduct policies
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor
