Year Round Underwriter - Life New Business Underwriting Department

The Operations Department

Northwestern Mutual has two, year-round paid internship opportunities in the Life New Business Underwriting Department at our Franklin, WI campus. Our internship will provide a student with a variety of work assignments which will:

  • Supplement academic studies with actual learning experiences.
  • Familiarize a student with the workflow and core job duties within our Operations area and other supporting departments.
  • Provide an experience that could potentially lead to a full time opportunity in one of the Operational Department Areas.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Attend training classes during the summer to expose intern to the fundamentals of life insurance underwriting
  • Work part time (20hr per week) during the school year to accommodate the school schedule and full time (40 hours) during the summer.
  • Actively process and issue basic life insurance applications.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and handle a high volume of casework and phone calls.
  • Shadow various work teams to have a greater understanding of the operational areas.
  • Attend team meetings.
  • Active involvement in projects, lean processing events and committee work.
  • Network with a variety of people across departments.

QUALIFICATIONS

A qualified student will need to be in good academic standing, entering their senior year the Fall of 2020 and should have a career interest in the Applied Health Sciences, Pre-Health programs, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Finance, Business, Communications and/or Insurance Risk Management field. Must have strong interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Candidates must successfully complete all testing as required. Other skills and abilities required include:

  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, leadership and negotiating skills.
  • Strong planning and organization skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • A willingness to accept challenges and take appropriate risks.
