Job Description
WORKING FOR CLIENT ASSOCIATION: Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, SITC
REPORTS TO: Director of Scientific Publications
DIRECT REPORTS: None
EMPLOYEE STATUS: Exempt (Minimum of 37.5 hours/week)

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) is a non-profit medical professional society of influential scientists, academicians, researchers, clinicians, government representatives, and industry leaders from around the world dedicated to improving cancer patient outcomes by advancing the science and application of cancer immunotherapy. Reporting to the Director of Scientific Publications, the Medical Writer is responsible for the review, development and update of scientific and medical content for society publications. Includes all aspects of written product development including outline of manuscript/project scope, literature reviews and bibliography development, scribing for high-level meetings and teleconferences and providing organized notes to group leaders, interfacing with appropriate collaborative groups or individuals during the writing process, and adhering to applicable guidelines in order to ensure timely delivery of high quality end products.

This role requires the ability to undertake projects that require a variety of writing styles, include highly scientific research and review manuscripts, media-focused pieces, meeting reports, web content, etc. The ability to write quickly and succinctly but comprehensively, sometimes to tight deadlines, is important.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In direct collaboration with academic/clinical authors, assist in researching, writing, revising, and submitting review manuscripts, including clinical immunotherapy practice guidelines, clinical research recommendations, and meeting reports to scientific/medical journals
  • Assist academic and clinical authors in the development of original algorithms, tables and figures designed to accompany manuscripts submitted for publication
  • Assist academic and clinical authors in the development of abstracts, posters, and slide decks for presentation at scientific/medical meetings
  • Work in collaboration with department Director and other team members to ensure cohesive communications, accurate project status reports, and successful project completion in a timely manner including proactively identifying areas of concern or opportunity
  • Actively participate in meetings and teleconferences as needed to plan, develop, and evaluate written projects; scribe during scientific meetings and prepare organized notes for participants
  • Provide support to volunteer leaders serving on steering committees and specialist task forces as needed to aid in the successful completion of the committee activities and outputs
  • Maintain all needed files and systems to track bibliographic reference histories and manuscript development, and report on manuscript/project progress as requested
  • Ensure compliance with pre-established good publication practice guidelines, collaborative agreements, and copyright law, and ensure proper acknowledgement of support and participation as applicable
  • Assist with development of accurate and appropriate scientific copy for promotional and website materials
  • Collaborate with other Society departments and staff as needed to provide writing assistance and/or serve in an advisory role to ensure accurate scientific content on printed promotional pieces, web text, educational content, scientific accuracy in grants and proposals, etc. for a wide array of constituency groups and target audiences
  • Provide overall support for ongoing scientific/medical programs and projects as they arise
  • Stay updated on new technologies, best practices and industry trends within areas of responsibility

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 
Education – MS in biomedical sciences with extensive scientific writing experience OR PhD or equivalent experience, with ability to evaluate medical research, required
 
Experience – Previous biomedical science writing experience and strong knowledge/experience of immunology or therapeutic oncology required; familiarity with nonprofit boards of directors a plus
 
Skills – Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills. Computer proficiency and ability to manage and juggle multiple writing projects. Attention to detail and accuracy. Able to work successfully in a team environment.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Travel of up to 4 weeks per year
Some evening and weekend work as needed
Occasional lifting, up to 50 pounds
