    Summer 2020 Internship to work in the Structures and Dynamics group of Engineering. Under close supervision of senior engineering staff, support analysis activities related to the fluid dynamics of liquid rocket, and airbreathing hypersonic propulsion systems and components.

    Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

    Under close supervision, the intern will perform structural or structural dynamics analysis of propulsion systems and components under the direction of senior structural analysis engineer. Responsibilities will include:

    80% - Setup and operation of various finite element based structural analysis simulations to determine the deflections, stresses and strains in propulsion system components. The student will be exposed to various classical hand calculations and experimental methods to help calibrate and validate the finite element structural response predictions.

    20% - Support special projects and requests as required, provide timely response to customers, peers and management with summary and supporting details as needed, present analysis results to both internal and external customers, and identify process improvement opportunities.

    Requirements

    Students must be actively pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or other related science/discipline. (Graduate students are preferred). Strong academic track record required.

    Candidate should have coursework in Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Material Science, and Thermodynamics. Coursework in Finite Element Methods preferred. Candidate must work well in teams, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be results-oriented with good problem solving skills and have the ability to take ownership of tasks.

    US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

    Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require minimal walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
