About the Opportunity

FirstEnergy Fossil Operations North, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.[FOS].

Our Fossil Generation is a vital component of our company. We are looking for individuals interested in a career as an Engineer within this group. There are multiple Engineering Internship positions available for Summer 2018 (May-August). Desired majors include 4-Year Engineering Technology (Mechanical or Electrical disciplines), Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.

We are looking to fill internship positions at the following locations:

  • Fort Martin Plant in Maidsville, WV
  • Harrison Plant in Haywood, WV

As an Intern, you will perform tasks related to engineering, analysis, construction, startup, maintenance and operation of electrical generation equipment and associated environmental facilities. Individuals are selected based on their motivation and flexibility to learn and perform projects at a variety of power stations as well as interface with central design and technical support groups. Activities for which may include operations support, testing, troubleshooting, project management and installation of new equipment.

Based on your Engineering discipline, as well as the department and projects you are assigned to, responsibilities may include:

  • Recognizing risks and taking precautions and preventative measures to ensure a safe work environment for others as well as self
  • Perform equipment inspections and assist in problem diagnosis and development of solutions
  • Conducting technical research and analysis, interpreting results and making recommendations
  • Offering and implementing technical solutions to basic technical processes and/or projects
  • Preparing engineering change packages, specifications, technical reports and presentations
  • Providing engineering output documents, such as minor modifications and corrective action response
  • Managing and completing assigned activities to support timely implementation of required plant operations
  • Ensuring compliance with design codes/standards
  • Providing sound customer service
  • Actively seeking ways to add value within scope of assignments
  • Anticipating and delivering results on a variety of job-specific projects
  • Performing project management and assistance in project start-up
  • Working independently as well as in a team environment
  • As a FirstEnergy Intern, you will also be expected to:
    • Fully participate in the FirstEnergy Co-Op/Intern program mandatory events
    • Utilize knowledge, skills and abilities to work on challenging assignments and contribute to FirstEnergy success
    • Gain understanding of the electric utility business and seize the opportunity to explore potential career paths at FirstEnergy
    • Engage in candidate self-assessments and use supervisory feedback to improve your performance
    • Develop career contacts and receive guidance from coaches and peers
    • Network with other students
    • Present to department members and leadership at the end of each session/rotation to highlight projects and contributions.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a four (4) year accredited college / university in a degree program focused on Electrical Engineering, .
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of two (2) CO-OP/Intern rotations
  • Minimum of sophomore, junior, senior or graduate level class standing is strongly preferred.
  • Must be willing to relocate to / reside near reporting location for the duration of the assignment
  • Successful completion of basic engineering coursework
  • Must be able to work in both an office and field environment with the ability to comply with safety procedures
  • Ability to incorporate safety into project designs and an overall commitment to safety
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code (NEC), Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Standards and load flow analysis preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively to achieve team goals
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop positive working relationships with employees at all levels of FirstEnergy Corp
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make formal technical presentations to various management levels
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Familiarity with AutoCAD applications preferred
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships
  • Desire to learn and grow; work across FirstEnergy, and deliver results
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines
