Job Description
The Mechanical Engineering Manager is accountable for the overall success of the mechanical design, management of projects, and daily operations of mechanical design and staff.  The ability to prioritize workloads, balance multiple projects simultaneously, work cross-functionally, collaborate with internal staff/departments and customers are key for this position.  This position will require strong leadership capabilities, be heavily involved with all aspects of the daily operations, and will be a “hands-on” mechanical design contributor to the projects.
The Mechanical Engineering Manager will interact with all departments and customers to ensure resources are applied properly and milestones are met.  This position combines project management, customer interaction and mechanical design abilities to efficiently and effectively produce and deliver high quality machine tools, and automation systems as well as mentoring, developing and training engineers. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  
  • Assign projects and teams to effectively manage workload and ensure timely completion of design release.  Strive to achieve the highest level of performance from team members.
  • Develop the Mechanical Engineering department through leadership, mentoring, and training.
  • Develop and maintain current design skills utilizing Entrust standards, software and best practices to complete design assignment as workload dictates.  Manage project(s) to completion as needed.
  • Coordinate the timely introduction of tooling discussions on each project to identify, select and procure appropriate tooling to ensure successful testing, run-off and installation.
  • Conduct high-level project reviews with project teams to identify challenges early.  Conduct project audits to ensure production goals, profit targets and deadlines are on target and met.
  • Manage project schedules to identify conflicts/gaps.  Recommend solutions/corrections to bring project in line with goals.
  • Support, promote, and execute company initiatives.
  • Conduct thorough research on complex topics and communicate findings in an effective method to internal staff and customers.
  • Effectively troubleshoot mechanical and tooling issues that arise providing hands-on expertise and application of knowledge to generate solutions as needed.
  • Advise and assist department staff with design, schedule, tooling application and selection, customer interaction, debugging and testing and overall project management to drive towards successful project outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop staff, providing on-going feedback throughout projects. Conduct annual performance coaching. 
  • Assist with driving sales direction through the development of new products and innovative product usage.
  • Provide interface from engineering to sales by defining product specifications that meet the need of the customer while ensuring feasibility and manufacturability.  Strive to maintain the goal of modularity and standards.
  • Actively participate in the production of technical marketing materials including authoring white papers, machine specifications for catalogs, and tooling specific sell sheets.
  • Thoroughly understand and effectively utilize SolidWorks, AutoCAD, EPDM and Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Coordinate customer provided runoff material delivery.  Actively participate in machine runoff, including operation of equipment, with customer through acceptance process.
  • Occasional travel (10-15%) for customer visits, troubleshooting, and tradeshows.
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering plus 5 years of experience in mechanical design (with a minimum of 2 years project management/supervisory responsibility) with preference given to machine design related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence staff toward efficiency and continuous improvement.
  • Interest in manufacturing and general understanding of machine shop practices.
  • Experience in power transmission design, hydraulics, automation, machine tool fixture design, bearing selection, ballscrew selection, and tooling design will be given priority over other design experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in machine tools and automation.
  • Ability to combine judgment, knowledge and experience to develop and communicate clear, concise ideas, solutions and instructions.
  • Organized, detailed thought process.  Ability to work quickly and accurately. Very high attention to detail.
  • Self-directed with excellent work ethic.
  • Drive and tenacity to contribute to a continuous improvement culture.  Ability to share ideas and work with other professionals.  Demonstrated effective management of staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.  Understanding of effective use of software within Windows OS.  Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Occasionally required to lift 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Occasionally stands and moves throughout shop.
  • Regularly sits throughout the day.
  • Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, reaches and carries.
  • Regularly utilizes depth perception, peripheral vision and close focus.
  • Regularly operates a computer and computer accessories.
