Job Description

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the
experimentation and development of new die casting materials, prototype
castings and process development across the organization.

Prototype Technician-New Concept

 

Perform mechanical assembly, including fabrication of prototype parts without engineering drawings or specifications.
Perform electrical assembly, including fabrication of prototype circuits, devices and electronic systems.
Ability to independently interpret data and problem solve issues with prototype electrical or mechanical systems.
Prepare preliminary sketches of prototype improvements or test configurations.
Ability to use machine tools which may include a drill press, band saw, brake press, lathe, etc.
Experience with internal combustion engines and engine powered equipment desirable
Experience with electric motors and generators/alternators and controllers desirable
Experience with welding, brazing, and soldering desirable.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.
Perform non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity, including various engineering tests using sophisticated and/or specialized measurement devices and test equipment; conduct tests or experiments requiring selection, adaptation or modifications of material, equipment or procedures
Document all aspects of tests including objectives, procedures, results, conclusions and recommendations
Compile and compute a variety of engineering data; may analyze test and design data and prepare reports

Analyze complex problems and recommend solutions; expedite prototype parts or assemblies
Develop, prepare and/or make recommendations for schematics, designs, test procedures, specifications and parts lists

May ensure engineering compliance to customer contract; responsible for accuracy of drawings and revisions prior to engineering release
May prepare BOM (Bill of Material) for new and existing products
May monitor or schedule production activities for an assigned project, e.g., estimate required hours and record actual vs. estimated, assist with and resolve scheduling problems for assigned project/job
Gather quotes for equipment

 

 

Ability to set-up, calibrate and use sophisticated and or specialized measurement devices and test equipment which may include IMEP meter, structural dynamics analyzer, wave analyzer, stress freezing devices, etc.
Thorough understanding of and ability to set-up, calibrate and measurement devices and test equipment which may include load cells, thermocouples, transducers, amplifiers, oscilloscopes, dynamometers, etc.
Understanding of a specialized technical area, which may include vibration, noise, carburetion, pressure, flow dynamics, etc.
Thorough understanding of various Briggs & Stratton products which may include air-cooled gasoline engines and their operation
Proficient computer skills and familiarity with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) and understanding of or ability to learn complex engineering software (e.g. LabVIEW, MatLab, etc.)
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to deal with a varied workforce and changing conditions
Ability to interpret data and create technical documents
Minimum of five years of experience working with various Briggs & Stratton products and components which may include small/large engines, engine powered equipment, etc.

Education:

NA

Associate's Degree in a specialized technical, scientific or related field
