Job Description

Assist provider in the assessment, examination, treatment, and other management of patients in the clinical setting. Prepare the examination and treatment rooms, instruments and equipment for patient care. May operate equipment; give injections or treatments under the direction of the Provider and/or Charge Nurse. All duties performed must reflect Clinical Skill Checklist competency as determined during the orientation and probation periods and updated as recommended by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review the providers schedule the day before to determine the appropriateness of the schedule and that the necessary equipment is available the day of the patient’s visit that will be used for the patient’s examination.

  • Review the schedule at the beginning of the session to determine that the needed charts are available in the department.

  • Room patients; obtain vital signs and chief complaint per clinic protocol.

  • Comply with all policies and procedures related to the clinic and corporation, as well as department specific (nursing, human resources, safety and security, etc.).

  • Provide patient education within skill level.

  • Provide clinical illness management within skill level for EKGs, updraft nebulizer, wound care, treatments/procedures, and other common ambulatory care procedures based on written provider orders on the patient order sheet and under the direction of the RN.

  • Provide routine immunizations for patients per protocol.

  • Maintain supply and inventory for exam room and medical assistant cart. Stock and prepare rooms/carts according to provider's specialty prior to and at the end of each clinical session.

  • Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms and nursing station between patients and at the close of shift per protocols.

  • Attend regular internal and external departmental meetings as assigned. Absences must be approved by the Lead Nurse.

  • Review patient charts for completeness of the progress note and encounter form by the end of the session and report to the provider.

  • Work collaboratively with the provider for the coordination of quality health care to the clinic's patients including screening and handling messages, processing referrals and orders, and communicating delays in care to patients and relevant staff.

  • Return the patient chart to the unit clerk for pick up by medical records at the end of the provider’s session.

  • Provide back up for co-workers’ breaks/leaves, as needed and when assigned.

  • Attend and record notes for all scheduled staff meetings, trainings, conferences etc. per protocol.

  • Act as a resource for training medical assistant students and/or orienting new employees.

  • Seek and participate in continuing educational/professional training opportunities including regularly reading specialty-related materials. .

  • Ask for help, direction, assistance, and support as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Education:

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant, Associates of Science with AAMA certification. Certification in CPR mandatory.

  • Experience:         


    Two years or more in a clinic, physician’s office or hospital setting preferred. Nursing students who have completed at least two nursing clinical rotations will be considered for this position. Experience working in Pediatric Department preferred.

    Must be able to pass a medical assistant pre employment test for employment consideration      

    Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology is mandatory. Proficiency in conversational Spanish is a plus. Must demonstrate the ability to handle and deal with multiple situations effectively.
