Job Description:
WORKING ON ANY ASSIGNED SHIFT ANY DAY OR NIGHT OF THE WEEK OR DURING EMERGENCY SITUATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED. (These are temporary appointments from November to late March. Appointment to First (1st) or Third (3rd) shift.)
NOTE: THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE OMNIBUS TRANSPORTATION TESTING ACT OF 1991 AND THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION REGULATIONS INCLUDING MANDATORY DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING APPLY TO THESE POSITIONS. THE APPOINTING DEPARTMENT WILL CONDUCT A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION WITH PREVIOUS EMPLOYERS AND DRUG TESTING OF ALL CANDIDATES CERTIFIED FOR APPOINTMENT.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B (no airbrake restriction) at time of application and maintained during incumbency is required for Highway Maintenance Worker I classifications. Experience operating a wide variety of vehicles and equipment preferred; experience in semi-skilled mechanical maintenance preferred; building and grounds maintenance and construction related work preferred. Graduation from high school or G. E. D. equivalent preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the techniques methods materials and equipment used in maintenance and improvement of highways, roads, buildings, grounds and equipment; knowledge of public safety rules and regulations; knowledge of and familiarity with the maintenance lubrication and minor repair of a wide variety of vehicles machinery and equipment; skill in operating and driving trucks, tractors, jeeps, and other equipment used in snow removal and in the improvement and maintenance of grounds and roads; ability to lift repetitively up to 60 pounds; ability to follow both oral and written instructions ability to use hand tools; ability to work in adverse weather conditions; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others.
DUTIES: Under direct supervision to perform a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of buildings grounds equipment fixtures and facilities at Milwaukee County owned and operated airports the Highway Maintenance Division and the Zoo building and grounds; to operate and maintain power and construction equipment trucks jeeps sweepers tractors with attachments snow removal equipment; and other vehicles over 25000 GVW; to assist skilled tradesmen and other maintenance personnel; to install and remove snow fences; to haul snow fences fence stakes hay bales brush and mulch; to lift and haul picnic tables benches bleachers waste containers and food for animals; to transport animals and to perform other such duties as may be assigned.
