Kolb+Co. SC is currently accepting applications for the position of Tax Manager - Generalist.
This position requires:
A Masters Degree with Accounting Major plus a minimum of seven (7) years in public accounting, in progressively responsible positions required. Proven history of lead generation and practice development. Ability to manage multiple clients, jobs and staff necessary.
Position Summary:
Reviews simple and complex (consolidated, multi-state) tax returns and perform provision reviews. Demonstrates an understanding of tax issues related to the preparation of returns and be able to resolve issues through communications with the client, the accounting department, third parties and/or consulting with the partners. Properly organizes files with all issues addressed and documented. Returns completed by the manager should require only a higher level partner review on difficult returns. Represents the client before taxing authorities and handles issues that come up in an audit and any other special projects that relate to the client. Position reports to a shareholder of the tax department.
Essential Functions:
• Recognizes the broader implications of a project and looks beyond the directed instructions. For example, when completing a return or other project, a manager should consider the following: (this list is not all-inclusive):
• Does the answer/income/tax/change/research make sense?
• What effects does this have on the business or related individual?
• How do the results compare to year end planning? How are differences explained? Do the differences point to an issue/opportunity?
• If the answer to a question is no, how can I restructure the question or answer to get a more favorable result?
• Identifies tax issues, has good analytic abilities, and is resourceful in answering questions and resolving problems. Uses firm resources and/or consults with the accounting department or other tax department personnel to resolve issues. Ensures projects are completed with proper quality control and a continuous improvement mindset.
• Provides lead contact in a client engagement. Looks for planning opportunities and other issues to provide additional service to the client while in the process of tax planning and compliance. Keeps client service opportunities in mind when reading about current technical developments. Ensure all of the personnel assigned to the client are up to date on any developments at the client.
• Performs complex research and special projects, effectively using CD-Rom, internet and other library resources. Documents results in the appropriate format.
• Effectively communicates both verbally and in written form. Writes concise, effective letters to clients and taxing authorities, as well as proposals, fee quotes, budgets, and internal memos. Deals with billing issues, including consideration of the value of our services and appropriate billings and answers billing questions from clients. Communicates openly and listens effectively, ensuring that the client feels comfortable and confident in calling. Capable of conducting client meetings alone.
• Develops client relationships and gains client/advisor confidence including the controller and the owners of the business. Understands the client’s business beyond the tax aspects of the engagement, such as addressing succession planning issues, sale or purchase of a business, or investment issues.
• Organizes, prioritizes and understands workload and effectively delegates work to staff, ensuring timely services to clients, anticipating potential problems and avoiding surprises. Communicates to clients the importance of their providing timely paperwork and information. Takes ownership in projects and makes sure they are completed on time and meeting quality expectations.
• Works closely with staff, providing on-the-job training and coaching. Communicates expectations on engagements to the staff and provides timely and constructive feedback. Recognizes individual accomplishments. Is accessible to staff as a sounding board for concerns and questions.
• Assists in recruiting, developing training and acting as an instructor for the staff. Evaluates staff and makes recommendations on promotions, staffing, and salary adjustments.
• Serves as a role model for professional staff, demonstrating a positive attitude, a willingness to make personal sacrifices to meet client demands and by being a team player.
• Proficiently utilizes computer software such as tax software, word processing, spreadsheet, and other general office programs.
• Annually completes a personal marketing plan. Participates in the firm’s practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community and industry activities, including article writing, speeches and attendance at firm functions.
