AVAILABILITY TO WORK ANY SHIFT, WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS REQUIRED.


Education: Licensed or eligible for licensure as a licensed practical nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
Note: Must be licensed at time of hire.

Experience: Experience in the care of aged, chronically mentally ill or developmentally disabled persons.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the basic science, theory, practices, methods and techniques of practical nursing; knowledge of legal and ethical standards of nursing within the scope of practice; knowledge of nursing policies, procedures and protocols; knowledge of the principles of patient care; skill in performing basic routine nursing tasks involved in caring for the mentally ill and developmentally disabled; supervisory skills; English oral and written communication skills; ability to work in stressful situations; ability to initiate and sustain CPR; ability to make safe and competent judgments; ability to walk to assigned areas of the facility; stand, squat, flex legs, bend at the waist and walk-up stairs; ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs., and ability to assist in moving, transferring, and lifting patients up to 200 lbs.; and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with others.


Duties: Under supervision of a Registered Nurse, to assist with the collection of patient/resident and family data, and the development and revision of patient care plans; to maintain a safe therapeutic environment that includes adherence to infection control standards; to implement standards of care and mental health nursing practice in accordance with program and regulatory requirements; to participate in emergency procedures, restraining procedures and initiating and sustaining CPR; to observe, recognize and report pertinent patient/resident and family clinical data to the registered nurse; to delegate tasks to nursing assistants, monitor and redirect as appropriate; to document procedures, treatments, nursing care and clinical findings according to program policy; to administer medications according to established policies and procedures; to uphold patient/resident’s rights and maintain confidentiality for all patient/resident’s program and physician related information; to sustain therapeutic interpersonal relationships with patients, families and co-workers; to provide support to staff and participate in performance evaluations for self and others; to identify personal strengths and develop goals for needed growth in nursing practice and to perform such other duties as may be assigned.


THE EXAMINATION is open to qualified residents of the State of Wisconsin. Appointee must establish residence in Milwaukee County within six months of appointment and maintain such residency during incumbency.
