Position Description
Job Objectives: The certified nursing assistant, under the direct supervision of RN or LPN is accountable for the delivery of non-acute nursing care.
Job Criteria: •Successful completion of the State of Wisconsin approved nursing assistant program. •Able to read, write, spell and do basic math. •Read, write, speak and understand English. •Perform duties within the philosophy and mission of Cedar Community and the Total Team. •Must adhere to Cedar Community and department dress code.
Job Functions: * 1. Provides personal hygiene including bathing, oral care, skin and nail care and hand washing. Responsibilities relate to delivery of resident care. * 2. Completes resident grooming including hair care, shaving, dressing and weighing. * 3. Assists with toileting including bowel and bladder retraining and perineal care. * 4. Makes beds. * 5. Performs and assists with mobility, transferring, ambulation, positioning, and range of motion. * 6. Uses appropriate and safe body mechanics when lifting and/or transferring residents or supplies. * 7. Uses good hand hygiene techniques to prevent the spread of infection. Knowledgeable about infection control policies. * 8. Assists in orienting residents to household environment and routines upon admission and throughout stay, as needed. * 9. Documents accurately according to CLHCC policy and procedures. *10. Maintains confidentiality of all resident care information and assures residents' rights and privacy are protected at all times. *11. Reports promptly to nurse on household for assignment. Job Functions continued: *12. Participates in the planning of resident care through shift reports and resident care staffing meetings, when assigned. *13. Informs nurse of any observations and changes in a resident's condition. *14. Serves residents their meals, feeds, motivates and assists them with intake of nourishment and fluids, as appropriate. *15. Observe resident's dietary intake and reports any changes to nurse on household. *16. Answers all call signs and requests of residents as soon as possible. *17. Assists residents in keeping their rooms clean and orderly. 18. Maintains nursing unit in a clean and orderly manner. *19. Keeps all residents' personal belongings and equipment clean. Notified appropriate department for repair, as needed. 20. Escorts residents to appointments and/or therapy departments, as scheduled. 21. Participates in household activity programs planned for residents, as needed. *22. Attends and participates in unit nursing staff meetings and monthly professional education programs. 23. Performs a total inventory of all resident's possessions on admission, discharge or transfer. 24. Sends residents' possessions to laundry (clothing) and/or Medical Supply Clerk (dentures and glasses) for labeling, as appropriate. *25. Alerts nurse to resident emergencies. *26. Assists with post-mortem care, as assigned. 27. Transports dietary carts and linen carts. *28. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest, as well as, a calm environment throughout the household. 29. Provides behavioral interventions as appropriate.
Environment: The certified nursing assistant works inside the facility, which is climate controlled at 72 degrees. There is frequent exposure to blood, body tissues and other potentially infectious fluids. There is some exposure to loud and unpleasant noises, dust and chemicals. May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members or visitors.
Physical Requirements: •Able to maintain a specified level of care for between eight to 32 residents (numbers of residents vary per household and shift assigned), consistent with Cedar Community policies. •The ability to physically transfer, lift or assist residents whose average weight is 160 pounds, but may be much greater. •Able to push residents in wheelchairs/geri chairs/transport devices throughout the building. •Mobility to spend 80% of the work shift standing and/or moving about work area. •Able to use hands and arms to carry trays, position residents, take pulses and temperatures and other listed equipment. •Able to walk, stoop, twist, bend and squat to perform essential job functions #1, 3, 4, 5 and 15. •Able to communicate and respond clearly on telephone. •Able to see objects closely to read care plans, charts, directions, labels, thermometers and assess residents. •Able to discern colors on fire panel, warning labels and lights. •Able to hear and respond to resident's spoken needs, emergency procedure instructions and to use the intercom. •Able to deal with combative resident.
Mental Requirements:
•Able to concentrate on detail with frequent interruptions. •Able to follow, complete and remember daily requirements, safety procedures, and routines over the 7 ½ hour shift or longer. •Able to remember and enact emergency procedures and lost resident procedure. •Able to understand concepts of Geriatric Care. •Able to comprehend, and utilize professional education materials.
Mental Requirements continued:
•Must have patience, tact, sense of humor, enthusiasm and a willingness to handle difficult residents. •Possess ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. •Able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
Equipment: Lifting equipment, including mechanical lifts, adjustable beds, side rails, gait belt, bathing equipment, scale, laundry and food carts, telephone, intercom, water faucets, thermometers, watch, adjustable ceiling tables, wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids, electric shavers, catheter, bed pan flusher, and hopper sink.
Working Hours: 7 1/2 hour shifts, every other weekend and every other holiday. May be requested to stay beyond shift in an emergency. Students must be available to work some weekends and school vacation.
Responsibility in an Emergency:
Able to hear and see voice activated fire system and follow emergency procedures. All employees need to respond to emergency situations immediately and capable for the safety of the residents and staff. Must be able to walk stairs to evacuate residents.
