Department: WCAS Neurobiology
Salary/Grade: NEX/9

Job Summary:

Conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques. Research technician for systems neuroscience laboratory. Will assist with: equipment set up and device assembly, data collection and analysis, rodent surgery and animal preparation, basic device fabrication (3D printing, laser cutting, basic electronics). Will order and maintain lab supplies. Will maintain mouse colony. Requires some prior laboratory experience and familiarity with computer programming (Matlab, Python).

This will be a 1-year renewable position based upon performance and funding availability. This position is a FULL-TIME position at 40.0 hours per week and works on-site. The anticipated start date for this position is September 3, 2024, (or a later date, to be determined between the candidate and supervisor).

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical
  • Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
  • Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities

Molecular Biology:

  • DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression
  • Southern, Northern, Western blotting
  • PCR, RT-PCR
  • Plasmid preparation
  • Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
  • Recombinant virus production and purification

Immunology:

  • Flow cytometry ELISA, Elispot assay
  • Cytokine assay Antibody production and purification

Animal:

  • Husbandry Breeding and screening transgenic
  • Cellular Biology: Cell culture, cell isolation
  • Functional studies
  • Transfection

Histology:

  • Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Microscopy
  • mice
  • Dissections
  • Blood collection
  • Surgical procedures
  • Database management of colony

Other (please specify):

Systems neuroscience procedures

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • HS diploma or equivalent and some basic science courses is required.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Demonstrated laboratory experience
  • Coding (MATLABor Python)

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Coding (Matlab or Python)

Target hiring range for this position will be between $16.55 - $23.28 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
