Description

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee (the Society) is searching for a seasonal Teaching Artist to join a very fun environment and talented team of professionals in supporting one of the most cherished community assets, the Milwaukee County Zoo. The Summer Teaching Artist will serve as the primary instructor for the Arts Education Program's Let's Get Wild and Let's Get Wild-er theater camps serving students ages 8-9 and 10-13 respectively. The role works closely with the Arts Education Program Manager and Summer Camp Coordinator in support of the ZSM's Mission to educate people about the importance of wildlife and animals and support the Milwaukee County Zoo (MCZ), and the Conservation Education department's vision to inspire and empower all members of our community to take conservation action.

This is a seasonal position expected to work the following schedule:

  • Must be available 40 hrs/week for onboarding June 10 - 14, Let's Get Wild (June 17-21 and July 15-19) and Let's Get Wild-er (July 22-26 and August 5-9). Camp sessions run from 8am-4 pm, Mondays-Fridays.
  • Must be available up to 20 hours/week for out-of-session camp weeks: June 24-28, July 8-12, and July 29-August 2.
  • Must be available for mandatory staff trainings May 21 & 22, 1-4pm and June 1 & 2 , 8am-4pm.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute all summer camp program duties as assigned by the Arts Education Program Manager and Summer Camp Coordinator:
    • Serve as lead instructor for summer theater camps.
    • Lead daily student check-in and dismissal procedures.
    • Prepare essential materials for camp curriculum, e.g. crafting supplies, etc.
    • Collaborate with Zoo Pride volunteers and support staff to assure best practices and positive student outcomes in programming.
    • Lead end-of-camp showcase events for family and friends of students.
    • Incorporate notes and feedback from the Arts Education Program Manager and Summer Camp Coordinator.
    • Arrive punctually to all teaching shifts, team meetings, summer trainings, and professional development sessions.
  • Represent the ZSM and MCZ on-site and in the community.
    • Greet, guide, and create a personal experience for Zoo visitors.
    • Project a positive image and energy.
    • Follow all uniform guidelines as provided by the ZSM handbook and the KWT Handbook Addendum.
    • Assist in marketing KWT programming in the community.
  • Promptly and clearly communicate schedule conflicts to the Company Supervisor.
  • Maintain knowledge of all relevant scientific, conservation and performing arts topics as discussed in summer camp programming.
  • Collaborate with Conservation Education Interns and participate in their performance evaluation.
  • Learn and implement all policies and procedures as listed in the ZSM Employee Handbook.
  • Respect and maintain all work areas so they are presentable for Zoo guests, funders, and other ZSM or MCZ employees.
Qualifications
  • Two years of professional, semi-professional, or educational theater experience.
  • Experience teaching elementary age students in a classroom and/or summer camp setting.
  • Proven ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills; Spanish or second language fluency a plus.
  • Must have reliable transportation to the Milwaukee County Zoo.
