Job Description
The House Supervisor manages and coordinates the hospital activities of patient care and management for the assigned shift. She/He is responsible for recognizing and assisting in solving patient care, professional, administrative, and supervisory problems. She/he may be the first person called to respond to a rapidly declining medical condition for a patient when TB is suspected, so she/he can respond with the TB respirator. She/he serves as a management/administrative liaison to hospital departments and services. She/he functions as the nurse in programs that do not have RN coverage. Duties may vary on each shift, depending on patient care needs; staffing on each program, and the availability of additional personnel. This position is responsible for facilitating and coordinating quality services. She/He cares for patients who range in age from four years old to geriatric.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 12:00pm-8:00pm (occasional weekends included)

Human Resources

  • Oversee the staff within the programs during managers' absence.
  • Provide for staffing to meet the needs of the patients in the program.
  • Interact with employees in a sensitive, positive manner.
  • Use the staffing grid as a guideline for provision of staff.
  • Review assignments within programs to ensure the ability to meet patient needs. Problem-solve any workload dilemmas.
  • Visit all clinical programs to oversee patient care and to assess the stability of the therapeutic community.
  • Evaluate personnel activities. Provide coaching and teaching to staff related to performance and patient interventions.
  • Perform procedures that require professional training or techniques.
  • Provide guidance and direction in crisis situations, including the management of aggression.
  • Provide feedback about incidents that occur on the shift to those staff involved and to their managers as indicated.
  • Understand and use the Human Resources policies and procedures manual.
  • Involve the vice-president of Employment and Training Services, along with the immediate manager, in any potentially volatile employee-related situation and initiate disciplinary process, as needed.
  • Approve any necessary overtime or missed meal for staff.
  • Facilitate recruitment and orientation of new employees.
  • Complete necessary forms for recruiting and hiring new staff timely and accurately.
  • Conduct interviews that are comprehensive, fair, and lead to a timely recruitment decision.
  • Promote the completion of the orientation and competencies.
  • Provide evaluations for assigned staff.
  • Coordinate scheduling with the scheduling specialist.
  • Incorporate acceptance and training of students into practice.

Operations

  • Facilitate intra-department communication and oversee patient care and safety.
  • Ensure that the Restraint & Seclusion policy 04-087-xxxx is followed.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the seclusion and restraint are documented appropriately including initialing the form to verify review.
  • Assure that a debriefing is held with all of the staff involved in the event, including the physician, to evaluate if all appropriate assessments and interventions were utilized.
  • Facilitate and ensure that the treatment plan is updated, and patient's strengths are integrated.
  • Execute a full review of the entire event at the conclusion of the restraint and seclusion debriefing for completeness; report as requested as a quality improvement project.
  • Ensure clarity of communication and positive interaction among:

Facilitate admissions and discharges.

  • Act as a liaison for referral sources.
  • Act as a contact for patients and families
  • Assist with the admission process.

Participate in monitoring care and processes.

  • Complete audits for identified performance improvement projects.
  • Work on projects, and make suggestions, for improving systems.
  • Insure completion of co-signatures for care orders.
  • Apply performance improvement tools in daily problem solving.

Ensure life-safety and emergency preparedness.

  • Direct the staff's response to emergencies and disasters and ensure the implementation of appropriate measures.
  • Conduct fire drills in collaboration with the safety officer.
  • Effectively and thoroughly execute all qualified medical professional (QMP) duties and responsibilities.

Additional Job Description:

Education/Training Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred. Registered Nurse license by Wisconsin State Board of Nursing is required; license must be in good standing with the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing.
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience in a psychiatric care setting.
  • Previous management/clinical supervisory experience is preferred.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification or American Red Cross Professional Rescue is required within thirty (30) days of date of hire. Bi-annual re-certification is required.
  • Formal training in management of the aggressive patient within sixty (60) days of date of hire. Annual re-certification is required.
  • Must be deemed competent to serve as a qualified medical professional (QMP) as outlined in the Medical Staff bylaws of Rogers Memorial Hospital. This essential job requirement is evaluated and potentially reviewed at least annually, based on results of the QMP job competency.
