Position: Farm Management Coordinator

~Farmer to oversee Smart Farm

Location: Good Shepherd hospital Smart Farm; Barrington, IL.

Full Time; 1st shift

~Schedule is primarily M-F but will require longer hours and some weekends during the growing season (spring and summer months).

Major Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement effective farming techniques to ensure healthy production.
  • Support daily field operations (harvest, wash, pack, deliver produce) and greenhouse work alongside farm assistant, additional hired laborers, and volunteers.
  • Manage and direct volunteers and hired laborers.
  • Support and provide expertise in the Smart Farm expansion plan.
  • Work with pantry and food farmacy coordinators to help determine produce production and distribution for each site.
  • Operate, maintain, assess, and repair small tractors, and implements.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair pumps, plumbing, irrigation lines, and sprinklers.
  • Maintain an accurate and timely harvest records and record keeping.
  • Collaborate with external and internal partners to help support the Smart Farm expansion plan.
  • Collaborate with leader identifying and vetting new vendors, submitting expense reports for farm equipment, supplies and other miscellaneous items related to the farm operations.
  • Manage organic certification (recordkeeping, reporting, inspections)

    Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

    • None

    Education Required:

    • High school graduate or GED
    • 3-4 years of experience in vegetable production, fruit tree pruning and trellising.

    Experience Required:

    • Organic farming experience preferred
    • Ability to work in a team environment


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

    • Demonstrated flexibility to work with shifting timelines and schedules.
    • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
    • Maintain a positive attitude in harsh weather conditions.
    • Ability to adapt and remain flexible collaborating with the hospital and other non-traditional partners.
    • Valid driver's license.
    • Successful completion of background screening


    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

    • Ability to safely operate tractors and other farm equipment preferred, but not required.
    • Will be exposed to outside in extreme weather conditions.
    • Must be able to work 2 Saturdays a month May-September
    • Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
