Position Purpose:

Under the direction of the Lifeguard Supervisor or designee, the position is responsible for maintaining safety and security at City of Racine beaches.


Expected Work Schedule:
Two (2) week lifeguard training in mid to late May.

Thirteen (13) week swim season from the first weekend in June through Labor Day weekend.

Average work week: 40 hours.

Rates of Pay per Hour*: $19.57
Essential Duties

Essential Duties:

* Monitors and supervises swim area activity at assigned beaches.

* Maintains a safe swim environment, protects swimming participants, provides first aid, and performs emergency safety procedures if necessary.

* Control assigned Lifeguard Zone, enforcing all beach rules and city ordinances.

* Promote water safety by educating and informing beach patrons of potential and actual water hazards.

* Maintain rescue equipment and supplies.

* Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Required:

* Successful completion of PRCS Lifeguard Qualification testing.

* Ability to follow oral and written instructions with the minimum of direct supervision.

* Ability to communicate effectively, and exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact when dealing with the general public.

* Ability to respond to emergencies in a calm, efficient, and responsible manner. Ability to operate City vehicles in a safe, defensive, driving posture.



Educational Qualifications

* Possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License.

* Lifeguard Certification

* Preferred graduating high school seniors intending to enroll with full-time undergraduate college credits in the fall.

* But individuals regardless of school enrollment will be considered with appropriate up-to-date certifications.


Supplemental Information

Physical Demands of the Position:
Duties involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as swimming for long distances in rough waters, walking/running over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, leaping, jumping down, standing in place or continual walking, lifting and carrying of moderate to heavy items (including people) on a consistent basis.

Environmental/Working Conditions of the Position:

* Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

* Exposure to open water with variable conditions including large waves and extreme cold.

Equipment Used:
May be asked to operate a boat motor, two-way radio, basic tools, utility cart or small truck.
