Job Description

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: The Medical Assistant will support the health care provider in the delivery of patient care with basic nursing functions. The Medical Assistant reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager/Lead Registered Nurse/Lead Medical Assistant/and or the Director of Clinics & Provider.

JOB SUMMARY: This position is devoted to the delivery of primary care in an ambulatory setting with emphases on prevention and health maintenance. The Medical Assistant will be required to apply principles of comprehensive, community-based, patient-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally and linguistically appropriate care coordination. Strong customer service, communication, teamwork, and multi-tasking skills are a must. Perform duties and carry out the necessary functions required in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols and standing orders. All duties performed must reflect the MA Skill Checklist as determined during the orientation and probation periods and updated as recommended by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and maintain examination and treatment rooms in preparation for patient care.
  • Maintain examination/treatment rooms, including inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Perform an inventory of supplies and equipment for the department.
  • Perform routine maintenance of clinical equipment.
  • Perform pre-visit screenings following protocols approved by OCHC and the ordering provider.
  • Obtain, evaluate and record patient history using appropriate tools and protocols within the EMR.
  • Assist in the establishment, organization, and maintenance of patient medical records.
  • Maintain medication and immunization records in the EMR with the Wisconsin Immunization Registry.
  • Apply computer and other electronic equipment techniques to support office operations.
  • Receive, organize, prioritize, store, and maintain transmittable information utilizing electronic technology.
  • Obtain vital signs.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as ordered by the provider and within legal boundaries.
  • Prepare and administer oral and parenteral (excluding IV) medications and immunizations as directed by the ordering provider, and as permitted by Wisconsin law.
  • Screen and follow up with test results, per provider recommendations.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies.
  • Perform CLIA-waived tests.
  • Perform electrocardiography and respiratory testing as ordered by the provider.
  • Document patient communication and clinical treatments timely, accurately, and appropriately.
  • Educate the patient as directed by the ordering provider in health maintenance, disease prevention, and compliance with the patient's treatment plan.
  • Identify community resources for health maintenance and disease prevention to meet individual patient needs.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments.
  • Recognize and respect cultural diversity.
  • Employ professional telephone and interpersonal techniques, applying medical terminology appropriately in all settings.
  • Adapt communication to an individual's understanding.
  • Recognize and respond effectively to verbal, nonverbal, and written communications.
  • Serve as the communication liaison and patient advocate between the patient and health care team.
  • Provide coverage for other staff members.
  • Enforce HIPAA Regulations.
  • Identify and respond to issues of confidentiality.
  • Perform tasks within legal and ethical boundaries.
  • Comply with established risk management and safety procedures.
  • Recognize professional credentialing criteria.
  • Perform and actively participate in quality control, quality improvement, and organizational strategic plans.
  • Attend and actively participate in department and other organizational meetings.
  • Maintain skills through continuing education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assignment is not permanent and maybe changed at any time at the discretion of the Clinic Nurse Manager, Lead RN, Lead MA and or Director of Clinics & Provider Relations to meet the needs of the corporation.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology is mandatory. Proficiency in conversational Spanish is a plus. Must demonstrate the ability to handle and deal with multiple situations effectively. Must have empathy and compassion for all patients and staff. Demonstrate the ability to treat all patients and staff with dignity and respect. Must perform in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently, effectively and productively with Providers and staff. Demonstrate excellence in customer service. Ability to communicate with the provider, charge nurse, lead nurse in a cooperative, respectful, and constructive manner is essential.

QUALIFICATIONS: Two years or more in a clinic, physician's office or hospital setting preferred. Nursing students who have completed at least two nursing clinical rotations will be considered for this position.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or 2 years of MA experience. (Associates of Science with AAMA certification preferred) Certification in CPR mandatory.
