Job Description
Interior Design Department Chairperson                                                                             October 20, 2014
Mount Mary University seeks application for a full-time, tenure-track position as Chair of the Interior Design Department. The Interior Design Department is part of the School of Arts and Design. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of a Master’s Degree in interior design or architecture and/or have extensive related industry experience; and five years of teaching experience interior design at the college/university level.  The department is particularly interested in candidates who have an energetic, team-building leadership style and a record of building synergistic relationships with industry partners.  This appointment includes teaching with an average load of eight credits per semester.  Commitment to a limited number of summer hours is expected to support administrative and recruitment activities.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Teach 8 credits per semester at the undergraduate level in interior design supporting both studio and lecture classes for interior design and interior merchandising degree students.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate majors to achieve graduation goals in a timely manner. Address overall student professional development needs through continuous feedback and example.
  • Oversee the development of internships, independent studies and field work placements as part of required educational experiences.
  • Promote the department and work to attract students to the University through investments in community activities and other recruiting events.
  • Mentor, support and evaluate full-time and adjunct faculty including reviewing course evaluations and making recommendations for promotion and tenure. Supervise administrative support staff.
  • Foster industry relationships and develop professional interactions for students within the curriculum as well as within opportunities for student internships.
  • Act as Sponsor for ASID Student Chapter preparing students for leadership roles in professional organizations.
  • Responsible for assessment of the department, including program review, annual updates and accreditation. Prepare CIDA accreditation documentation and provide reports to accrediting bodies.
  • Build and sustain a dynamic network of department alumnae
  • Develop and evaluate curriculum requirements and work to align student educational experiences with a CIDA accredited education and marketplace demands
  • Work with the school dean on course scheduling, rotations and enrollment forecast modeling. Identify classes that need to be scheduled for each semester. Coordinate the schedule with other department chairs as needed
  • Oversee department budget and collaborate with school dean on establishing budget priorities and long term needs for staffing, classroom technology and equipment.
  • Attend School Chairs meetings and work to build collaborative synergy between diverse School disciplines. Represent and report strategic initiatives at the department level to the School of Arts and Design level.
  • Serve on department and University committees.
 
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications:
 
  • Master’s degree in an interior design-related discipline. Degree from a CIDA-accredited interior design program preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience at the college or university level; CIDA-accredited programs preferred. Experience with CIDA accreditation review process a plus.
  • Must have NCIDQ certification. Active as an ASID or IIDA professional member a plus. LEED AP considered important.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience in interior design-related field.  Working knowledge and experience with Google Sketch Up and Autodesk REVIT programs a plus.
  • Evidence of scholarly/creative activities.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and empathic design focus is required to support Creative Campus initiatives and design thinking approach within University

About the Department:
The Interior Design Department curriculum integrates professional course work with a liberal arts core. The Interior Design Department offers two majors, one in Interior Design and the other in Interior Merchandising which is a cross discipline collaboration with the Business and Communications departments.  Students have an ASID student chapter and access to a resource library within the designated Interior Design studio classrooms.
