Company Overview

Independent Care Health Plan (iCare) is a specialized managed care program for persons with disabilities age 19 and older. The company began in 1994 with a three year federal grant from the Health Care Financing Authority (now known as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid or CMS). The purpose of the grant was to research if managed care could work for persons with disabilities. Independent Care Health Plan provides access to medical, dental, behavioral health, vision, prescription drug coverage, and social services through a unique care management model. The mission of iCare is to improve the quality of life for individuals with unique and complex medical, behavioral, and human service needs while providing value to our customers and stakeholders, and respecting the dignity of those we serve.

Independent Care Health Plan is a joint venture arrangement of Humana Wisconsin Health Organization Insurance Corporation and the Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI). iCare is proud to offer a diverse work environment where people of all backgrounds and cultures bring innovative solutions to our members unique needs. Independent Care's wellness efforts have been officially recognized by the American Heart Association for the past two years as a "Fit Friendly" company." By offering both formal and informal wellness initiatives we are able to actively encourage healthier lifestyle choices for all our employees...and maintain a heightened awareness of healthy living and lifestyle issues among our employees." Joe Kern, Independent Care. Independent Care's free, voluntary formal wellness program is offered in partnership with Interra Health - 56% of staff participate in this program through which they receive an annual health risk assessment and feedback on their wellbeing from health professionals from the wellness program provider. Participants earn points throughout the year for activities like getting regular medical & dental checkups and tests, exercising regularly, volunteering, taking part in onsite wellness activities (like Lunch & Learns, Weight Watchers @ Work) and participating in walks, runs, and rides for charity. At the end of the year their points are totaled and they earn various rewards. Independent Care's wellness program actively promotes healthier living through a Walk/Run Club, regular all-staff electronic wellness newsletters, a regularly updated wellness page on the corporate intranet site, and a display of informational postings & pamphlets in the break room. Independent Care's also offer a variety of 'healthy snacks' in the break room. The Healthy Snack Sale presents a healthy alternative to the vending machines in the building. All the money raised through Independent Care's healthy snack sale is divided up and donated to NAMI of Greater Milwaukee, The American Heart Association, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure It is the policy of Independent Health Care Plan as an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer to recruit, hire, and promote for all job classifications without regard to race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender, genetics, national origin, age, handicap or status as a special disabled veteran or any other status protected by law.
