It all began in 1896, with a three-room creamery and a commitment to make new and better dairy products. J.P.Gehl began his business with an idea for improving the quality of local butter. His "renovated" butter caught on quickly with local bakers, and soon the business grew to offer a whole range of premium quality dairy ingredients.
Always quick to adopt new technologies, J.P. Gehl saw an opportunity to serve the 1920s retail market with milk of more consistent quality. Ice cream was soon added, and by the 1950's Gehl's became a well known name in fresh-delivered home and restaurant dairy products.
As the market for dairy products changed in the 1960s, Gehl's grew from a regional dairy producer to a national pioneer of fresher tasting, shelf stable dairy foods. The company (then called "Gehl's Guernsey Farms") launched new ready-to-serve cheese sauces & puddings that grew quickly under the respected Gehl's brand.
Today, our leading efforts in aseptic packaging have transformed the industry and created entirely new markets -- like our dispensed cheese sauces. These advances in freshness have helped fuel a nationwide appetite for richer, creamier dairy sauces and desserts. With over 200,000 restaurants and foodservice operators behind us, Gehl's has become the proud creator of the tastes that America craves.
