Beloit College

About Us

Founded in 1846 by two Yale men, Beloit College is Wisconsin’s oldest college, and one that has long been a national leader in the delivery of a rigorous, innovative, and rewarding liberal arts and sciences education. Beloit routinely appears as a “best value” in U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, and is heralded as one of the “Colleges That Change Lives” by the late author and former New York Times education editor Loren Pope. Beloit draws students from 49 of the 50 U.S. states and nearly 40 foreign countries. Located on the Wisconsin-Illinois stateline, the college is easily reached from O’Hare Airport, downtown Chicago, and Madison, Wis., by a convenient and inexpensive bus service.

This college and this education—now over 167 years old—is more relevant than ever. The curriculum is flexible yet demands that students put the liberal arts into practice. Over 60% of Beloit students have at least one internship before graduation and over a quarter of those students say it led to their first job. Over $300,000 is made available to students for summer internships and research opportunities. The National Science Foundation ranked Beloit 31st as a producer of students enrolled in science and math graduate programs; Beloit ranks #1 among liberal arts colleges as the producer of future Ph.D.s in anthropology. First employers of Beloit graduates have included Groupon, American Dance Festival, Americorps, Bates White Economic Consulting, Centers for Disease Control, The Smithsonian National Museum, The Washington Post, to name a few.

The Liberal Arts in Practice

Putting the liberal arts into practice defines a Beloit College education. Practitioners of the liberal arts synthesize knowledge and experience, are able to transfer it to new settings, and through meaningful reflection and self-assessment, build on prior experiences to confront new challenges and take full advantage of new opportunities. Beloit College students practice the liberal arts not only by acquiring depth of knowledge in a major area of study but also by taking full ownership of their education, bringing to their everyday lives a sense of purpose and consequence.

This curricular flexibility provides students with the range of motion necessary to study broadly (and abroad); double major or double-down in their chosen program; play a sport, an instrument, or a theatrical role; and to pursue work and service opportunities throughout their time on campus.

Faculty

Beloit College faculty are scholar-teachers who act as mentors to their students, include them in their lessons and research, and support their development within the classroom and outside it. Beloit professors guide, engage, interact, and ask tough questions, all while continuing to explore their own work as scholars, bringing students along for research opportunities and summertime projects. Of the roughly 105 full-time faculty at Beloit, 97 percent hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field.

Professor Rob LaFleur, the 2011 winner of the James S. Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, says Beloit is a place that “channels intellectual passion” and continues to inspire and drive his scholarly pursuits.

“I have found, in short, in my colleagues and students, a place where the longing for meaning and introspection is not just talk,” he said.
